Potential SPOILERS lie beneath!
One of the more curious members of the cast in Star Wars Episode 7 is legendary actor Max von Sydow. There has been a good amount of guessing as to who exactly his mysterious character is. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he half robot?
What seems to be adding up in the rumors and leaks is that we'll meet Max von Sydow's character on Tatooine with Kira, Han Solo's daughter, living in the old downed AT-AT that we've seen in some of the concept art.
From the sounds of things he's a bit of mysterious mentor to Kira. He collects artifacts, especially Jedi and Sith related artifacts and shares old stories with Kira. In his old age he's come to rely on many bits and pieces of cybernetics to keep himself together. And the rumor is his character will turn out to be someone that, when revealed, die-hard fans will be very surprised by.
Is Boba Fett Alive?
Immediately thoughts went to Boba Fett. He's someone who would be about the right age and if he escaped that pit, he'd probably need a new arm like his character has in those concept pieces.
And he does seem a bit menacing - leaks have given his characters ties to the Sith beyond his obsession with collecting artifacts. Does all this add up to Boba Fett being the one who ends up looking after Han Solo's daughter? The irony!
But this theory has a lot of issues, not the least of which is that it has been shot down by certain sources behind the credible Episode 7 leaks out there. It does sound like Han's daughter is in Tatooine to keep her profile low and not let anyone know that she is the daughter of Han and Leia, the leader of the Republic. But that doesn't mean that these two don't know where their kid is and who is keeping an eye on her. It makes more sense that this is someone they would trust.
Enter theory number two: Lobot?
The only credible tease I've read regarding Max von Sydow's character is that he's not Force-sensitive and he's someone that only hardcore fans will be surprised by. Lobot fits that bill - and on top of that he's about the right age, fond of cybernetic implants and ostensibly a friend of Han Solo due to his connections to Lando Calrissian.
The guy kind of resembles Max von Sydow a bit too, no? Ok, maybe this is all a pretty big stretch but other guesses are ranging from such characters as Sifo-Dyas, Jimmy Smits' Bail Organa and childhood friends of Anakin Skywalker such as Ric Olie and Kitster Chanchani Banai. (This could explain the Vader fascination going on in the concept art...) with But none of these seem any more likely. And most of them would probably be greeted more with a shrug than with surprise.
What do you think? What mystery character do you think Max von Sydow is playing?
