Since 2007, the only games that we saw from Naughty Dog up until 2013's The Last of Us, were the adventures of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series. Now, it seems like the witty blockbuster character will be getting his last game with Uncharted 4 : A Thief's End.
The future of the developer however is of course unclear. Will they bring out some new IP, or shall they return to The Last of Us like they've done with Uncharted? We won't know for a while, but I'm wondering what fans are thinking about the prospects of The Last of Us 2 and whether they'd ever like to see a sequel get a release date for the PS4.
Uncharted 4 vs The Last of Us 2
The Last of Us is a game that numerous fans are in agreement with: not only was it a masterpiece within the gaming world, but it was also a game that had one of the boldest and greatest endings. Some fans feel like reentering this world will deplete the quality of the conclusion to Joel and Ellie's narrative. But is this the case for you guys?
In the hypothetical situation that we were granted the opportunity to pick between Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us 2, which game would get your vote? Me personally, I've never been that big of a fan of Nathan Drake's adventures, or at least not to the extent that I was engaged with The Last of Us.
But then again, the gameplay demonstration at the Playstation experience was seriously impressive. The fact that we were just shown an average area, during a particular part of the day when the lighting is quite bland and I became this excited for the title's release, is quite an achievement.
Naughty Dog are aiming to excite players through average gameplay moments by imbuing them with the power of their cinematic flair. I'm totally down for that. But then I think of The Last of Us and wonder once more. I for one was convinced that Uncharted 3 was the conclusion to Drake's adventures, so seeing a sequel for me is a bit strange.
But I must still admit that the thought of The Last of Us 2 scares me. What if Naughty Dog are forced into returning to this word and "wrapping up" Joel and Ellie's story? The Last of Us was on a mission for its 20 hours to present its players with the extraordinary dilemma that was Joel's actions. Do we believe they were right? Was he wrong to prolong mankind's pain for the sake of saving one girl that he loved?
This question is left in our minds at the end, and returning to the story would give us an answer and that's the last thing I want. But then there is one way that I think The Last of Us 2 could go down, but it would involve Joel becoming the antagonist.
I don't want The Last of Us 2 if it means that Joel and Ellie are the protagonists once more, their main story is complete. But that's not to say that the world Naught Dog has created and the virus within it should be left alone. So I'm sceptical. For now though, I'm content with the idea of Uncharted 4, and maybe The Last of Us should be just a standalone title.
What do you think gamers? Do you think The Last of Us 2 would be a bad idea? Are you excited for Uncharted 4? If you had to pick one title to get a release date in 2015 out of these two what would it be? Let us know!
