So Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has an internal release date for the PC, Xbox One and PS4. Well, at least someone nows the date I guess! However, Konami have even voiced their frustrations with the fact that the title's release date for 2015 has still not been announced. I wonder what Kojima is waiting for.
Perhaps he wants it to be a big announcement as it may be one of the final MGS games he directs! But we shall have to wait in that department. In the mean time, fans have come up with some great theories on what lies ahead in MGS5. We're certain that Kojima has some incredible twists lined up, but what is the relation between Skull Face and Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain?
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Big Boss & Skull Face
In terms of hints, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes may not seem like it gives us much to go on for MGSV (I mean it's certainly lacking in the whole gameplay department for that price), but the hidden tapes around the area are actually very intriguing when it comes to hinting at what lies ahead.
The Phantom Pain is sure to explore the ramifications brought about by the characters in this world seeking revenge. It's what ultimately leads Big Boss to become the tyrant he is in the two Metal Gear games. But Skull Face has had his fair share of hate and longing for revenge too it seems.
As the pressures within me stretch me to bursting, and I force myself not to cry out, though the words I thought were carved into me are gone, and all I knew is dead. I know how you feel. I've felt that. So show me. That I'm not the only one. That you too can return to this world, for revenge. - Skull Face
The above quote hints at the similarities between Big Boss and Skull Face, as Kojima has already made it clear that the skull imagery is associated with both sides of this conflict. They're not all that different from one another after all. In fact, some fans believe that they knew each other beforehand and that Skull Face was a part of Big Boss' militia and may have even had something to do with the destruction of Mother Base.
But what is Skull Face up to? It seems that a lot of fans think he's actually creating an army of his own - an army of "Phantoms". The audio clips that feature him torturing individuals could be a kind of test. An initiation. After they've been forced to undergo such atrocities they become hollow.
A number of the guards in Ground Zeroes talk about the Phantoms like they are a group, one of them even says: "It's like rubbing shoulders with dead men." They've lost the will to live it seems and blindly follow Skull Face's commands. They are emotionless and broken.
But of course, this is what fans do best - we speculate. So MGS5 fans, what do you think the relationship between Big Boss and Skull Face is? Have they met before, are they not all that dissimilar from one another? And is Skull Face amassing a phantom army?
Be sure to let us know in the comments and hold out for the announcement of that release date! It's surely on the way. And be sure to check out this article that talks about whether The Boss will finally get her own MGS game after MGSV.
