Opinions, theories, and facts regarding movies, comics, and games.

Can you believe that this Summer will be 10 years since the release of Christopher Nolan's first installment in his Dark Knight Trilogy!? Where does the time go? When this film was in development, I remember hearing all the negative opinions people were having towards this movie because of the awful Schumacher movie, Batman and Robin. Others were saying that this was just going to be a one-and-done film that would take place before the 1989 Tim Burton directed Batman film (and perhaps it was originally intended to be so, I've heard it both ways).

But what caught the attention of many was the trailer and how serious it looked and how it didn't seem to have the same tone that most superhero movies have had up until this time.

Long story short, the movie blew the minds of both the general audience and the longtime fans. Christopher Nolan set a standard with this movie and it hasn't been, in my honest opinion, successfully replicated nor would I want any movie to try.

But I'm not reviewing this film, not in this article anyway, I just want to take a moment and look back 10 years at the actors who starred in this wonderful film and what other films they've done since Batman Begins was released.

*NOTE: Films in BOLD are films that I've seen. Films in ITALICS are films that I have not seen but still have an interest in seeing.*

Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman)

Christian Bale has definitely risen to become an A-list actor. Although he has had a few substandard films (what actor hasn't) he has had many opportunities to help boost his status along the way.

  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Harsh Times (2005)
  • The New World (2005)
  • Rescue Dawn (2006)
  • The Prestige (2006)

  • Out of the Furnace (2013)
  • American Hustle (2013)
  • Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)

Michael Caine (Alfred Pennyworth)

Michael Caine was always a revered actor, even before Batman Begins, and he's continued to impress us along the way by doing what he does best. Here's a look at what Mr. Caine has done between the now and the release of Batman Begins in 2005:

  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Bewitched (2005)
  • The Weather Man (2005)

  • Last Love (2013)
  • Stonehearst Asylum (2014)
  • Interstellar (2014)
  • Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)

Liam Neeson (Ducard)

Liam Neeson has definitely become a man of recognition to the public eye, but not necessarily for the man he plays in Batman Begins, but for other starring roles like Bryan Mills in the Taken series. Here's a look at his work over the last 10 years:

  • Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Breakfast on Pluto (2005)
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
  • Seraphim Falls (2006)
  • Taken (2008)
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

  • A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014)
  • Taken 3 (2015)

Katie Holmes (Rachel Dawes)

Katie Holmes unfortunately was not featured in any of the sequels following Batman Begins and it's a shame too because she wasn't bad at all in my opinion. However, Maggie Gyllenhaal did portray a better Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight. Here's a run-down of where Katie has been since Batman Begins:

  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Thank You for Smoking (2005)
  • Mad Money (2008)
  • The Romantics (2010)
  • The Extra Man (2010)
  • Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)
  • The Son of No One (2011)
  • Jack and Jill (2011)
  • Days and Nights (2014)
  • Miss Meadows (2014)
  • The Giver (2014)

Gary Oldman (Jim Gordon)

Gary Oldman has become one of my favorite actors just because of the sheer fact that he is wholeheartedly a character actor. You can hardly distinguish him from the so many different roles he's played in his lifetime. Let's take a look at what movies he played these amazing roles in:

  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Dead Fish (2005)
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
  • Backwoods (2006)
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
  • The Dark Knight (2008)
  • The Unborn (2009)
  • Rain Fall (2009)

  • Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011)
  • Lawless (2012)
  • The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
  • Guns, Girls and Gambling (2012)
  • Paranoia (2013)
  • RoboCop (2014)
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Cillian Murphy (Dr. Jonathon Crane/Scarecrow)

Cillian Murphy was an amazing cast as Doctor Jonathon Crane A.K.A. Scarecrow in Batman Begins. His wily persona definitely makes him a unique actor.

  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Red Eye (2005)
  • Breakfast on Pluto (2005)
  • The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)
  • Sunshine (2007)

  • Aloft (2014)
  • Transcendence (2014)

Tom Wilkinson (Carmine Falcone)

I don't know what it is about the characters that Tom Wilkinson plays that makes me like him so much but they do. Every time he comes on screen, I'm glad to see him, like a familiar face or a like a distant relative you enjoy hearing from. Here's a look at Wilkinson's work since his role as Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins:

  • Piccadilly Jim (2005)
  • Batman Begins (2005)

  • Felony (2013)
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
  • Good People (2014)
  • Selma (2015)

Rutger Hauer (Earle)

Rutger Hauer was not made any more famous by his role in Batman Begins. But the man isn't lacking any fame as many may know him for his role as Roy Batty in 1982's Blade Runner. Let's take a look at what other roles we might have missed him in in the last 10 years:

  • Sin City (2005)
  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Mirror Wars: Reflection One (2005)
  • Minotaur (2006)
  • Mentor (2006)

  • Il Futuro (2013)
  • Real Playing Game (2013)
  • True Blood (2013-2014)
  • 2047 - Sights of Death (2014)

Ken Watanabe (Ra's al Ghul)

Ken Watanabe has been on my list of actors to keep an eye for ever since I saw him in The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise. It's a shame that he didn't get to play a much larger role in the overall scheme of Batman Begins, but his presence was definitely welcome. Here's a look at what else he's done though since the release of Batman Begins:

  • Year One in the North (2005)
  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
  • Memories of Tomorrow (2006)
  • Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
  • Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009)
  • The Unbroken (2009)
  • Shanghai (2010)
  • Inception (2010)
  • Hayabusa: The Long Voyage Home (2012)
  • Unforgiven (2013)
  • Godzilla (2014)
  • Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

Mark Boone Junior (Flass)

I never knew Mark Boone Junior's name until I went to write this article. He's one of those actors that stands out to me only because of his shaggy appearance. Here's a few other movies he made his shaggy presence known in in the last 10 years:

  • Venice Underground (2005)
  • Lonesome Jim (2005)
  • The Nickel Children
  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • The Legend of Lucy Keyes (2005)
  • Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)

  • Lost Angeles (2012)
  • Carlos Spills the Beans (2012)
  • Life of Crime (2013)
  • Helicopter Mom (2014)

Linus Roache (Thomas Wayne)

I thought Linus Roache was the perfect cast for the part of Bruce Wayne's dad, Thomas Wayne, for the sheer fact that both share some facial similarities or at least could very easily look related. This made it a little easier to believe when Earle states to Bruce Wayne:

"You look like him. Your dad."

Here's a look at some of the work Mr. Roache has been busy with for the last 10 years:

  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • 12 and Holding (2005)
  • Find Me Guilty (2006)
  • The Namesake (2006)
  • Broken Thread (2007)
  • Before the Rains (2007)
  • Yonkers Joe (2008)
  • Law and Order (2008 - 2010)
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2011-2012)
  • Supercapitalist (2012)
  • Non-Stop (2014)
  • Vikings (2014-)
  • Innocence (2014)

Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox)

Last up is the amazing actor, Morgan Freeman. Mr. Freeman has had a wealth of fame way before Batman Begins and he has continued to maintain that fame even after the finale of the Dark Knight Trilogy. Let's take a look at the movies that have been blessed by his participation in the last 10 years:

  • Unleashed (2005)
  • Edison (2005)
  • Batman Begins (2005)
  • War of the Worlds (2005)

  • Conan the Barbarian (2011)
  • Dolphin Tale (2011)
  • The Magic of Belle Isle (2011)
  • The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

  • Transcendence (2014)
  • Lucy (2014)
  • 5 Flights Up (2014)
  • Dolphin Tale 2 (2014)

Conclusion

So obviously the stars have been busy these last ten years; some making big, high-profile movies, others making lower-budget or independent films, and small remnant flocking to television series.

It's crazy, though, to think about how old this movie is. Be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
