A little over a year ago, fans of E.L. James' sex-em-up Fifty Shades Of Grey were becoming accustomed to the idea of British ultra-hunk Charlie Hunnam getting all sweaty and dominant in the conference and bedroom as the titular Prince Of Kink Christian Grey.
But to everyone's surprise, Hunnam pulled out at the last minute leaving fans and the film production in a spasm of confusion as to where to look for a new lead - do they turn to Ian Somerhalder or to Matt Bomer?
Quoting "scheduling difficulties" as the reason for leaving the production, Hunnam went on to finish the hit series Sons Of Anarchy and take some time beating up giant monsters in a giant robot in Guillermo Del Toro's brilliant Pacific Rim and filming the impending Crimson Peak. But if he had enough time to do these, why not suck it up and stick with Shades?
I was going to finish Sons at like 11pm Friday night, get on the plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for Fifty, missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning
...said Hunnam in an interview with British tabloid The Guardian. Despite how interested he may have been to take on the surefire fame building role, after he realized the sheer magnitude of the project, from filming Anarchy and Shades, the P.R. campaign and subsequent tours and being thrust into the limelight, Robert Pattinson style, he decided he couldn't perform to his own high standards.
But it all ended on a sweet note as Hunnam was replaced by his fellow countryman Jamie Dornan, who has taken to the role like a well talced body to skin tight PVC and will join Dakota Johnson in the furious limelight for the next few months to come.
Shame we didn't get to see this though...
