Happy Friday the 13th~! Today, we’re paying a teensy-tiny tribute to our favourite Horror film franchise FRIDAY the 13th! Remarkably, this franchise spawned 12 films with a 13th heavily rumoured to be on the way now that Paramount Pictures has reclaimed the rights to make new FRIDAY THE 13th movies by acquiring it back from New Line Cinema. Although not seen fully until the second film, Jason Voorhies has become a machete-wielding horror film institution for the better part of the last 30 years (and the next several hundred years if we are to follow the chronology of JASON X). He doesn’t like teens. He doesn’t like sex. He doesn’t like drugs. Mostly because he drowned while two high teenagers were f*cking while they were supposed to be watching him. Oops. Way to go idiots, now look what you’ve unleashed! It wasn’t too bad at first, Mrs. Voorhies was doing her best ‘Rage Against the Machine‘ impression and was ‘Killing in the Name of‘ her poor dear dead son Jason. But when Alice lopped Mrs. V’s head off with a knife in self-defence at the end of the first Friday…boo yah! That called forth the monstrous engine of chaos and destruction that we’ve all grown to love for three decades!

But first, here’s a picture of the beast you’ll have to contend with. Pay close attention to the few notes underneath the images — they’ll teach you a few things you might need to know about Jason, that just might help you…

Jason Voorhies – “Friday the 13th” – Franchise: 13 Films – Movie Kill Count: Over 300 – Things to Know That Could Save Your Skin: Drowned as a child at Camp Crystal Lake; His Mom went on a murder spree until she was killed, which resurrected Jason; Wears a Hockey Mask; Carries a Machete; Impossible to kill! He’s been on a working murder vacation to New York City, got bounced around by a chick with crazy telekinetic powers, travelled into space in the far future, and duked it out with Freddy Krueger!

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 (1981)

Directed By: Steve Miner; Sean S. Cunningham

Written By: Ron Kurz; Phil Scuderi

Starring: Amy Steel; Adrienne King

Released: May 1981

“I don’t wanna scare anyone, but I’m gonna give it to you straight about Jason. His body was never recovered from the lake after he drowned. And if you listen to the old-timers in town, they’ll tell you he’s still out there, some sort of demented creature, surviving in the wilderness, full grown by now… stalking… stealing what he needs, living off wild animals and vegetation. Some folks claim they’ve even seen him, right in this area. The girl that survived that night at Camp Blood, that… Friday The 13th? She claimed she saw him. She disappeared two months later… vanished. Blood was everywhere. No one knows what happened to her. Legend has it that Jason saw his mother beheaded that night. Then, he took his revenge, a revenge he continued to seek if anyone ever enters his wilderness again. And, by now, I guess you all know we’re the first to return here. Five years… five long years he’s been dorment. And he’s hungry. Jason’s out there… watching… always on the prowl for intruders… ready to kill… ready to devour… thirsty for young blood”

The preceding quote is the story that Head Camp Counsellor Paul tells the other Counsellors at a camp fire in the early half of the movie. Unbeknownst to him and all the others, Jason Voorhies is already watching them and picks them off one by one. Why do I like this movie over the original? Jason Voorhies has become a cult character of mythic status in horror. This movie was his first murderous foray (as opposed to his mother in the first Friday). Part Two is bloodier, scarier, and more visceral. It also has the distinction of being the last Friday movie that wasn't over the top and ridiculous (I realize how ludicrous the last statement sounds)…as Jason is still depicted as a deranged “human” in this movie — subsequent films built Jason into a supernatural engine of chaos and murder. Whether it was at Camp Crystal Lake, New York City, a copycat killer, or on a space station in the future, each following instalment of the franchise became more and more absurd with each offering. Because of that, I think Friday the 13th Part 2 will always be my favourite of the franchise.
