It's fair to say The Vampire Diaries does not follow girl code but this is television and that means drama. Last nights episode of The Vampire Diaries did not disappoint in that department. One of the most controversial ships took sail last night...Caroline and Stefan finally kissed. Now....where do they go from here? Many predict they are endgame, but with The Vampire Diaries renewed for Season 7, I don't think so. For others, the writers took a beautiful friendship between a woman and man and turned it into an awkward moment. That now moving forward will forever shadow their relationship, however it ends up. Adding fire to the flames...is how Liz Forbes' death was used as the prop.
Stefan and Caroline's History
Yes...Caroline did have a crush on Stefan in Season 1 and he did shoot her down. But Caroline's character in Season 1 is far from the Caroline we have now. She has grown. The writers tried to say that this ship has been a slow burn since Season 2. I don't see that....there is no way you can tell me that Caroline was still having strong feelings for Stefan in Season 2. She was with Matt, then she developed a relationship with Tyler, who she fought for and loved for two seasons. Let's not forget Klaus.....regardless of how many times people try and belittle Klaus and Caroline's relationship. It's fair to say it was more than just what the writers gave us in the end. They cared for each other and Klaus loved her, and in return she was starting to fall in love with him.
What's their relationship really about?
There's no doubt in my mind that Stefan loves Caroline. But he loves her as a friend and even admitted it this season. With her mother and everyone else pushing Stefan to take care of Caroline, which she confessed this episode. It just seems wrong to me. Then using her mother's death as a prop for this hookup was an even harder blow. I think that's the biggest issue most have with this ship. Maybe if it was written differently it would have been better. Plus add the fact that Caroline was not there when her mother died but was making out with Stefan didn't help much. Stefan and Caroline were perfect as friends. She needs a friend not another relationship. This was the perfect time for the writers to give Candice Accola a storyline that she could shine in. Not making it about a ship but just a girl who lost her mother and now has an eternity to come to terms with it. In the end I don't think Caroline and Stefan are endgame. Caroline was Stefan and Elena's number one cheerleader.
I can see the appeal of it. Guy and girl are friends and both date all the wrong people. Realizing that the right one is right there all along. Great movies have been made just off that plot. But the writers put way too many obstacles in place for Caroline and Stefan to be those two characters. I think they waited too long for this ship to be 'organic.' The kiss was beautiful and sweet but did not have the fire for me to believe it. Also...why does Caroline have to date all the guys Elena has dated. This is a town full of hot guys and Caroline and Elena both have dated Matt. Caroline has now hooked up with both Salvatore brothers along with Elena. I see this ending badly for Caroline because she never wanted to be second best to Elena. With Stefan she will be because no one can deny it. Stefan was totally in love with Elena, even after she broke his heart.
Caroline and Stefan could have had a beautiful friendship that blossomed into a love but more on the brother/sister level. That would have been great television. I know this may be a hard concept but men and women can be just friends. I'm a Caroline lover and I know she has more potential then being just someone's love interest and rebound. I hope the writers see that before it's too late.
