Just 3 days after Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures announced their deal about the formal entry of Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe, Sony has announced that the web-slinging super-hero will be featured on the third Captain America movie titled “Captain America: Civil War.”
“Captain America: Civil War” is slated to be released to theaters on May 6, 2016, which would mean that Spider-Man’s entry into the Marvel cinematic universe will begin next year, reports Yahoo! News.
When Sony and Marvel Studios announced the deal on Spider-Man on February 10, the two companies also stated that they will be co-producing a stand-alone and rebooted Spider-Man movie which is due for release on July 28, 2017.
With his entry into the third Captain America movie, there would be at least three Marvel superheroes in the film including Captain America who will be going up against Iron Man and the third being Spider-Man. It remains to be seen which side Spider-Man will take.
Initial reports on the plotline of “Captain America 3” indicated that Steve Rogers would oppose the Superhero Registration Act being espoused by Tony Stark and Iron Man because the public already knows that Stark is Iron Man, whereas only a limited few knows Steve Rogers is Captain America.
Another superhero in “Captain America 3”
Prior to the inclusion of Spider-Man, “Captain America 3” already has included the Black Widow to its plotline so that would mean a mix of four Marvel superheroes in all.
Captain America, Iron Man, and the Black Widow will all be featured in the upcoming second Avengers film titled “Avengers: Age of Ultron” showing on May 1, 2015.
As for casting, it is already clear that Captain America will be played by Chris Evans, Iron Man by Robert Downey Jr., and Black Widow by Scarlett Johansson. As of this time, the actor who shall be playing Spider-Man and his alter ego Peter Parker have yet to be named. Both Marvel and Sony have also revealed that Andrew Garfield, who played the web-slinging superhero in the two “The Amazing Spider-Man” movies shall no longer be continuing his role.
In the comic books, Spider-Man plays an integral and crucial role in the storyline of “Civil War,” but it really remains to be seen how he will take his position in the movie as regards the Superhero Registration Act.
A take-off point for Spider-Man
“Captain America: Civil War” will be directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. The movie is slated to begin production and filming later in the year. So it is likely that the new actor to play Spider-Man would be announced in the next couple of weeks or months.
One thing is certain at this point. With the entry of Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” it is almost likely that he will become part of the next two Avengers movie as well, “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2,” due to be shown in 2017 and 2018.
