Arrow has been a series of twists and turns from day 1. We have seen some great adversaries of Oliver Queen from the past and present, pushing him to go further and train harder.
The show has also not been light on the array of companions to join the Arrow, on his mission to save Starling City; Black Canary (Sarah Lance), Arsenal (Roy Harper), Wildcat (Ted Grant) etc.
But now we have a new kid on the block... and his name is... A.T.O.M
A.T.O.M's role in The [Arrow](series:720988)
Now, unless you have been away with the fairies or you are only just joining the Arrow universe - If so, I would recommend starting with Season 1 -
You will know that Brandon Routh has joined the DC TV Universe as Ray Palmer, new owner of Queen Consolidated and of course A.T.O.M.
Ray Palmer is motivated in helping change Starling City into Star City, after the destruction of the earthquake machine and downfall of The Glades.
Is Ray's motivation deeper than just helping out the fallen city?
In "The Climb", Ray reveals to Felicity that his girlfriend, Anna, was killed the night that Deathstroke's Mirakuru soldiers devastated the city. With his leg broken, he could do nothing to stop it. He then tells of his plan to complete his A.T.O.M. suit and fight injustice.
He asks Felicity to help determine the malfunction in the machinery's nanotechnology. She ultimately refuses, and implores him to reconsider his "suicide mission".
Who Is A.T.O.M?
Just as any superhero origin there are many different story arc's and also mutiple ATOM's from the Bronze to Golden age. Ray Palmer is the Silver Age ATOM.
Certain practices will not have been adopted into the CW adaptation of Ray, so here are some of the facts.
Raymond "Ray" Palmer, Ph.D., is a physicist and professor at Pace University. He is an all round 'good-guy' specializing in matter compression as a means to fight overpopulation, famine and other world problems.
Using a mass of white dwarf star matter he finds after it lands on Earth, Palmer fashions a lens that enables him to shrink any object to any degree he wishes.
Affiliating with Hawkman through his time in the universe, neither character was a major player when they were published and even today they are best used as supporting characters, hopefully we will start seeing the underdog's getting the spotlight they deserve.
Showcase #34 (Oct. 1961), debut of the Silver Age Atom.

Palmer has fought against several alien and supernatural threats, as well as having his own rogues gallery:
his arch enemy is Chronos the Time Bandit, the menace of the Bug-Eyed Bandit, the dangerous eco-terrorist Floronic Man, and the miniature misguided Bat-Knights of Elvaran.
He also had several time travel adventures by means of Professor Alpheus V. Hyatt's Time Pool.
When do we get to see A.T.O.M?
Guggenheim told EW that he will follow the same path as Laurel - The new Black Canary - struggling to adapt to the crime fighting lifestyle, he will be all over the place. Getting his butt handed to him will be a regular occurrence to begin with, until Oliver steps in and helps him .. How awkward - having to help the man who took over your families company.
I can imagine Brandon not being able to get his sizing right and getting himself stuck in places or confusing his adversaries by looking like an ant and picking a fight , it will be interesting to see how well the suit as a whole holds up.
Read his full quote below
He’s definitely a sloppy superhero in the sense of all of our characters don’t immediately have the easiest time fighting crime… I would say episode 19 really digs underneath what does it mean for Ray to be a hero. Is he a hero because of who he is? Or is he a hero because of the suit that he’s made?”
Though he will officially have the suit in episode 15, it seems there will be a few more episodes before episode 19 when we get to see a true release of A.T.O.M
We have seen that the ATOM suit was at Star Labs which would mean he will proably be needing help from team Flash to properly harness the dwarf star. A great episode to come to bring the two shows closer together.
I am also thinking that with the rise of dwarf stars & alien matter... they are setting up for Super Girl?
Routh/Palmer will make an appearance on the eighteenth episode, "All-Star Team-Up" of Arrow's sister-series The Flash
In January 2015, Arrow co-creator Greg Berlanti revelaed that they were in "preliminary discussions" for a spin-off series centered around The Atom (Routh).
