Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary was a very special night indeed. Not only did the star-studded event celebrate some of the most memorable past acts, but also introduced an explosion of new skits.
In preparation for the seminal sketch comedy show and for its colossal three-and-a-half hour live show running time, celebrities first took to the red carpet to mingle and to attempt to outshine each others' outfits.
From Hollywood legends such as Betty White and Whoopi Goldberg, to SNL regulars Tina Fey, Bill Hader and John Goodman, jump right in and get the scoop on my pick of the red carpet highlights:
A goddess in black and white, funny lady Amy Poehler certainly made an entrance.
Comedy genius Bill Hader looked right at home on the SNL red carpet. As a permanent cast member on the show from 2005 to 2013, his return was one of the most anticipated.
Check him out doing his thing as a gossipy coal miner:
Joining her bosom buddy Amy Poehler, Tina Fey looked sensational walking the red carpet.
Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake
Jimmy and Justin got super silly and played a big role in the 3.5 hour broadcast.
Their opening musical tribute to the show's most memorable moments was phenomenal:
The "Heart of Glass" singer looked severe (and hopefully up for a laugh later on!)
SNL veteran Kristen stole the red carpet with a show-stopping black gown. This is a female comedy hero, if I ever saw one!
SNL heavy-weight Will Ferrell looked dapper in a black suit and checkered silk scarf.
Whoopi clearly forgot it was red carpet event and chose practicality over style with her sheepskin boots.
But who cares! She is Hollywood royalty and she can do as she damn well pleases.
Orange is the New Black's Natasha Lyonne looked glamorous in a black mesh dress.
Jim Carrey may have completely covered up in a black suit and scarf, but his shoes were BANGIN'!
Funny woman Melissa rocked a sequined gown, showing off a slimmer figure in front of the paparazzi.
Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones
Hollywood's long-standing power couple stepped out in matching smart black outfits.
On the night, Michael was involved in one of comedian Jerry Seinfeld's gags from the audience as part of the show.
Wearing a revealing sparkly white number, politician Sarah Palin expressed some views on Tina Fey's impersonation of her way, way back.
The Alaskan claimed that the parody was so good that she even finds herself fooled from time to time:
"You know, I'll do a double take every time I see her on a rerun or a picture of her [...] I think she's great [...] I just talked to her again today and I brought her girls some Alaskan grown sweatshirts and hoodies. I really respect her."
No hard feelings then!
Taylor's minty creation was a far cry from the overwhelmingly black-and-white color palette going on on the night.
She then went on to prove that she really DOES go "out of style" in her transformation into a hippy-dippy struggling actress in The Californians skit.
Over the years, John has been a frequent host of SNL so naturally, everyone was expecting him to make an appearance. He looked incredibly stylish in a silk black tux.
Following the release of Fifty Shades of Grey this past Valentine's Day weekend, Dakota Johnson was bound to be in the lime-light. And clearly she dressed for it too with her blindingly dazzling silver mini-dress.
Check her out in action in the trailer below:
Betty White proved she was still a babe and after the red carpet, she went on to live out our fantasies even further by sensually smooching Bradley Cooper in The Californians skit.
Did I miss out anyone essential?
