In watching the last episode of The Walking Dead “Them” S5E10, we saw the group in total desperation looking for water, food & shelter. They had walkers following them and it seemed as though all hope was lost. In watching I realized there were signs of being a tight knit group, signs of deep mourning and signs of great hope. I would like to bring just a couple to light.

Water carries the image of renewal, promise and hope. The water that was offered from (a friend) Aaron in my opinion means he was trying to get the group to trust him by giving them the # 1 thing everything needs to survive. When they still didn’t trust the source with good reason, due to their past experiences, it began to rain which was healing, cleansing and life sustaining. Father Gabriel also made the statement of “I’m sorry my lord” and I think he was feeling like he was being spiritually cleansed and his faith was temporarily restored.

Pack of Dogs

When the group encountered a pack of dogs out in the woods that were quickly shot by Sasha and later eaten by the group, you could see that the dogs had formerly been pets because of their collars and tags. I wanted to note that the dogs had gone back to the pack mentality. The pack mentality naturally organizes the dogs for stability of the group. There is usually an alpha male and alpha female, the pack leader which may or may not be the alpha, the beta who is the second in command. Then there is the omega which is the weakest and may be bullied. Not only have the dogs gone back to the pack mentality but I believe our group has as well.

The music box

In Carl giving Maggie the music box, I believe that it symbolizes love and caring for someone you (Carl) considers as family. Maggie had been mourning by distancing herself and dissociating. I think the broken music box symbolizes Maggie’s state of mourning and how alone and broken she feels. When Maggie asks Sasha to go watch the sunrise with her, she took along the music box that Daryl has just fixed for her (cleaned the gears out). After sitting down and trying to get it to work both Sasha and Maggie began to laugh at the fact that it was still broken or so they thought…until it started playing (song unknown) at the same time Aaron introduced himself. I believe this was a symbol of hope as in the comic book Aaron is a good guy.

A little foreshadowing

Sasha was grieving just as hard as Maggie and Daryl but in a self-destructive way. All she wanted was revenge at any cost whether it was to herself or to anyone in the group. We saw this when she broke formation when they were killing walkers at the bridge by pushing them over the side. Instead Sasha grabbed the next walker fighting with it a little then stabbing it in the head causing everyone to break formation and to be at risk. Rick was almost bitten on the arm, Abraham was slashed by Sasha’s knife and when Michonne tried to pull Sasha back she was almost stabbed by Sasha.

I personally think that Sasha, even though she has found a sisterly connection with Maggie because of their grief will be the character that tries to commit suicide like Maggie in the comics. It is only my opinion that this might happen because of how she is acting with no sign of coming back. Also when everyone was sleeping in the barn she was shown sleeping right under a coil of rope.

The walker in the trunk

When Maggie was searching the vehicle it had keys on a keychain with a seahorse on it. It was shown several times hanging on the steering column and when she and Glenn were getting into the trunk of the car. When Maggie opened the trunk she found a walker that had been kidnapped, bound and gagged and locked in the trunk. I believe that when Maggie saw this walker it reminded her of the situation that Beth had been in. Kidnapped (taken against her will) which completely cemented in Maggie’s mind how similar the situations were. Right down to the fact that the lady was small, blond, with blue eyes. If you look at Maggie, on her belt she has what I believe to be Beth's sweater. She couldn’t even bring herself at first to deal with it but turned around wanting to at least put the walker out of it’s misery.

The Seahorse

The seahorse is considered a symbol of strength, power and good luck. The symbolic meaning of seahorses carry the following significances: Patience, Friendliness, Protection, Inflexibility, Perspective, Generosity/Sharing, High-Perception, Persistence, and Contentment.

A unique aspect of the seahorse is that the male is impregnated by the female and carries the offspring to term. This is a message of sharing the load in the home, and gaining perspective of all sides (genders) of an argument or situation. The seahorse has a boney exoskeleton which is a message of protection. Often when the seahorse comes to us it is a sign that we either need protection from our external circumstances, or we are building walls that aren't needed. Their armor-bodies are a sign that sometimes we might need to let our guard down - or perhaps we are leaving too open to get hurt.

The group has been going through the 5 stages of grief, denial & isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, & will finally come to acceptance. Everyone in the group is very fragile due to loss of loved ones, no supplies or a safe place to stay. I believe that the seahorse is a symbol of strength for the entire group. Whether they know it or not they share the burden of trying to survive and care for each other. They are truly a family and at all costs will get each other through because as Rick states…..”We ARE [The Walking Dead](series:201193)”.
