I know this is rather late, but due to living in the UK, I didn't get a lot of great 2014 movies until January/February, with all that out of the way now I can finally get on with my TOP 20 movies of 2014 list. It was an incredible year for film, the best in quite a while in my opinion, and I saw A LOT of movies, so this was tough....but I whittled it down to 20 movies that I absolutely loved, so starting at number 20:

20) The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Yes....I know, its not a very good movie, but every time I watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2 I have a lot of fun. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone elevate what would have been almost unwatchable without them. Visually its very impressive and the finale always gets me riled up, ready for more Spider-Man. I didn't like the movie the first time I saw it but I was willing to give it another chance and ended up seeing it two more times in cinemas. 7.5/10

19) WILD

Jean Marc Valee's "WILD" was one of the biggest surprises of the year for me, I expected a good film at least but I ended up loving the film. Reese Witherspoon is my top pick for Best Actress and for good reason, her work here was terrific. 8.8/10

18) LOCKE

A lot of great story can come from one man in a car. Ivan Locke is at a bad time in his life, work isn't going right and he's got an unexpected baby on the way from a women whom he is not married to. The story follows Locke as he makes several phone calls, trying to rationalize some of the decisions he's made and attempt to get his life back on track. Tom Hardy is excellent! 8.2/10

17) FRANK

I loved this movie from the moment I saw it, a witty, wacky and endlessly enjoyable film that is a lot deeper than you'd originally think. Michael Fassbender is a scene stealer in this wild musical romp! 8.3/10

16) GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

A space opera filled with humor, action and unforgettable characters! I'm surprised it's not higher on my list. This is an incredibly funny comic book film, perhaps the funniest Marvel has ever produced and it's a career defining role for Chris Pratt. I did see it three times in cinemas and had such a blast each time, but a lot of the fun is lost with home viewings unfortunately. 8.4/10

15) FURY

Packed with 5 great performances and truly memorable scenes, "Fury" was a harsh and honest look at WW2, not only on the warfare but at the soldiers it affected. This is the film that makes me a David Ayer fan. 8.7/10

14) FOXCATCHER

One of my most anticipated for the entire year, "Foxcatcher" was a haunting and subtext filled drama with three outstanding performances. It was a little slower than I had hoped but I LOVED this movie. 8.9/10

13) DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

An emotional, action packed and excellently directed piece of action sci-fi that is one of the best sequels of 2014, the characters are more fleshed out and the risks heightened, this is one you shouldn't have missed. 8.9/10

12) THE LEGO MOVIE

Not a film I loved at first...but upon further viewings I realized what I'd been missing. This is a masterfully animated and brilliantly scripted film that leaves me in stitches after every viewing. 8.9/10

11) THE GUEST

A thrilling, funny and endlessly entertaining blend of genres that left me longing for more. This is a expertly directed homage to classic 80's action thrillers with a great soundtrack and a terrifyingly charming lead played by Dan Stevens. 8.4/10

10) THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Wes Anderson is back on top form with his undeniably hilarious tale of a hotel concierge and his lobby boy in a story so ridiculous....it just might be true. The cast is superb, the performances even better and the screenplay simply sublime. 9.3/10

9) BOYHOOD

Richard Linklater's incredible cinematic achievement is a relatable, funny, authentic and celebration of ordinary life. Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke give the best performances of their career in a story spanning 12 years. 9.6/10

8) X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Perhaps the best X-Men yet, this time travel tale is funnier, more heartfelt and more entertaining than I ever could have imagined, the performances are great! Bring on Apocalypse! 9/10

7) EDGE OF TOMORROW

How is this movie this good?! I have no idea, but it is. This is a terrifically entertaining science fiction film that boasts two incredible performances by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt! Make sure you see this movie! 9.2/10

6) CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

This was my favorite movie of 2014 for a good few months, the action was incredible, the story intriguing and a thoroughly entertaining comic book movie, the best thing Marvel has ever done. 9.1/10

5) NIGHTCRAWLER

A funny, dark, and incredibly performed film that was shamefully snubbed at this years Oscars, both for Best Picture and Best Actor. Jake Gyllenhaal gives the best performance of his career, a darkly comical film that is sure to become a classic. 9.5/10

4) INTERSTELLAR

Not everyone loved Interstellar, but I left the cinema feeling fully satisfied. It was emotional, visually spectacular and its themes were nothing short of inspiring. The performances were also excellent. 9/10

3) GONE GIRL

A dark, twisted and endlessly entertaining thriller brought to life by mastermind David Fincher. Rosamund Pike is excellent as is Ben Affleck in this bloody mystery that will leave you astounded. 9.6/10

2) BIRDMAN

A straight up masterpiece that is a complete mind boggler. Michael Keaton gives the performance of his career whilst surrounded by an astonishing supporting cast, expect this to do extremely well at this years Oscars...lets hope anyway! 10/10

1) WHIPLASH

Whiplash is brutal, unforgiving and makes you question how much is enough for the risk of success? Miles Teller and JK Simmons bounce off each other remarkably well in this incredibly shot, edited and written film about a drumming student pushed beyond his limits. 10/10

So there you go, my TOP 20 of 2014! It was a great year and I can't wait to hear your top movies in the comments below! So let me know what you thought of my list and then tell me yours!
