We're just under a year away from seeing the Merc with a Mouth in his solo outing, and the casting news is flying thick and fast. Now Ryan Reynolds, T. J. Miller and Gina Carano are joined by Morena Baccarin for the upcoming movie.
Baccarin, probably best know in geekdom for her portrayal of Inara in Firefly, has been wowing audiences as Dr. Leslie Thompkins in Fox's hit show Gotham. While we all know that Jim Gordon can only end up with Barbara, Baccarin's Leslie is engaging and sympathetic as his current girlfriend.
Now Baccarin will be playing another comic book love-interest, this time for Wade Wilson. The Hollywood Reporter brings us the news of this latest casting, although her character's name is yet to be revealed. All we know so far is that "The character grapples with falling for a man with a hideously scarred face."
Many fans are hoping to see Baccarin as Copycat (A.K.A. Vanessa Carlysle) - Wilson's first love in the comics. Copycat is a shapeshifting mutant, able to take on the appearance and powers of anyone after touching them. Her history with Deadpool begins back when he was still a relatively normal mercenary, and they were in love. The happy couple were quickly shattered when cancer got involved, however, as Wilson left Vanessa rather than have her see him dying. We all know what happens next, of course. Weapon X, healing factors, insanity, all that good stuff.
Although Vanessa has been tipped as the female lead for this movie, I'm not 100% sure. On the one hand, it would mean that the new film is definitely a reboot (which makes sense, given the events of Days of Future Past), and the horror that was Wolverine can be happily wiped from our collective consciousness. We would get a re-made Deadpool origin story, along with pre-tumor Wilson and the Weapon X Project.
On the other hand, this doesn't fit completely with THR's report that Baccarin's character will be falling for a man who is already hideously scarred. Copycat meets Wade before he becomes disfigured, and after the project, the two haven't exactly been all hearts and flowers.
Another option for Baccarin could be Siryn (a.k.a. Theresa Cassidy). Siryn is the daughter of Banshee, with similar sonic powers, and was Wade Wilson's first great love as Deadpool. Siryn makes more sense (to me) for several reasons. For one thing, she fits in to the existing X-Men universe, and there is no doubt that Fox will want to connect the Deadpool film with the larger franchise. In fact, Siryn has already been in two of the X-Men movies (X2 and The Last Stand) in blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments. Banshee is well established in the most recent two films, and it would not surprise me in the least if Fox decides to play with the timeline for Deadpool, setting it further in the future than X-Men: Apocalypse, and including Banshee's child.
Of course, Siryn's inclusion makes sense for more than just franchising reasons. Her initial reaction to Wade's scarred face and then acceptance of it fits perfectly with THR's hints, and including her means that we would get less of a rebooted origin and more of a full-fledged Deadpool movie, which would definitely make fans happy. She's an influence for good in his life, and accompanies him on missions from time to time, meaning that we could see a real super-couple here, which would be fantastic. It's also a truly sad breakup, but one that leaves the door open for a continued on-again-off-again flirtation for many movies to come.
It may be that Fox decides to include neither of these characters in the new movie, however, and Baccarin's role is another one of Wade Wilson's flings, or a character created specifically for the new film. While I'm gunning for Siryn, I'm still just happy to finally be getting a stand-alone film for this absolutely awesome character, and I can't wait to find out what they do with it!
Deadpool is set for release in Feb, 2016.
