Well, it's official. Neill Blomkamp has signed on to direct an untitled Aliens sequel for 20th Century Fox. The project, which has been hinted at by the director for the last month, is shrouded in secrecy and is expected to take place after Prometheus 2.
Original Alien director Ridley Scott is set to produce Blomkamp's film.
Blomkamp recently revealed he came up with some concept art for his own Alien film and not only did 20th Century Fox executives take notice, but they came away impressed with his take, though there is no script yet.
Series star Sigourney Weaver had expressed interest at the prospect of returning as Ellen Ripley in Blomkamp's movie, but, as of this point, the actress has yet to sign on to the project.
Known for such films as District 9 and the upcoming sci-fi flick Chappie, Neill Blomkamp took to Instagram earlier today to announce that his planned Alien sequel is officially set to be his next movie.
While still in the early stages of development, concept art teased by Blomkamp hints at the return of both Ellen Ripley and Dwayne Hicks. This has led some to speculate that the film may cancel out the likes of Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection and pick up where James Cameron's 1986 sequel Aliens left off.
Again, at this point, all of this is speculation and neither Weaver or Michael Biehn have signed on to the project at this time. Still, how exciting is it to think a new Aliens film is finally moving forward?
More info as it becomes available.
