Like it or not, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is aaaaaall connected. Thus far, this has made a lot of sense, with both existing Marvel TV shows being pretty much direct spin-offs from the Avengers.

Now, with the latest addition to the MCU being [Daredevil](movie:47230) the first of four interconnected Netflix shows to air this year. While it has always been said that Daredevil would be directly connected to the other three shows (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist), but there was some confusion as to whether or not it would be as closely involved with the existing films and Agents of SHIELD.

Now, a telling tweet may have answered that question.

The official twitter for the show released this little teaser today, showing a poster for a boxing match between Battlin' Jack Murdock and Carl Crusher Creel.

Murdock, obviously, is Matt/Daredevil's father, whose failing boxing career is a huge element in his comic book backstory. It's going to be fantastic to see a really accurate Daredevil origin (the movie version had me shouting at the screen...) and so seeing Battlin' Murdoch's name is far from surprising.

Now Creel, on the other hand... Well, if you remember the name, you are probably thinking of [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](series:722469), where he made an appearance in season 2 as "Crusher Creel". Otherwise known as "The Absorbing Man" (although that name was not used in the show), Creel has the ability to absorb and mimic the molecular structure of anything he touches, and was last seen working for HYDRA.

Having Creel take on Murdoch makes it very clear that DD will take place within the same universe as the rest of the MCU, but is this just a little easter egg, or will the two end up crossing over?

I would vote for option B, for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it just makes practical sense. As it is, Agents of SHIELD has been widely criticized for having to keep time with the movies to the detriment of the show's pace. It takes an excessive amount of planning to ensure that every detail of the show lines up with the movies, and with the film universe expanding, the risk of directly connecting the new Daredevil series is that it would just be too complicated.

The other (and more important) reason is to do with the timeline. In the comics, Creel does, in fact, have a history as a boxer and lost to Murdoch. They had their big fight, and it's nice to see that kind of detail being honored in the show. However, all of this happened before Creel got his powers. At the time, this was simply two talented fighters squaring off, before everything went wrong. In order for this to connect directly, therefore, the writers would have to do some interesting acrobatics with time frames. I think that it is far more likely that this is perhaps a poster that Matt kept as a memento, or a memory that he has of a big fight (flashbacks! Who doesn't love origin flashbacks?), rather than something happening in the current time frame.

However they decide to include Creel, whether as a tiny nod to the comics or a full-blown re-appearance of Brian Patrick Wade, I'm just happy to see such devotion to the source material. I can't wait to see a version of the Man Without Fear that can wipe the 2003 film from our collective consciousness.

Does this image mean that Daredevil will crossover with Agents of SHIELD?
