In spite of the Oscars in a few nights time , I have tallied up all of the actors who have had the most nominations and are yet to win.

James Dean

Deans first nomination was in 1957 for best lead actor in Giant (1956) and again in 1956 for East of Eden (1955).His only 2 nominations before his death.

Samuel L. Jackson

Nominated in 1995 for Quentin Tarantino's classic Pulp Fiction (1994) as best supporting actor to date his only nomination although his fan base is one of the biggest

Will Smith

His first nomination in 2002 for the best actor in a leading role for Ali (2001) and nominated again in 2007 for best performance by an actor in a leading role for The Pursuit of Happiness .To date his only two Oscar nominations

Ian McKellen

Although being in such movie classics such as The Lord of the Rings franchise and X-Men films Sir Ian McKellen has only had 2 nominations , one for a supporting role in The Lord of the rings : The fellowship of the ring (2002) and one in 1999 for Gods and Monsters (1998).

Edward Norton

Nominated for best actor in supporting role in 1997 for Primal Fear (1996) and then again in 1999 for American History X (1998) ..Hope fully this year he can win an Oscar for his Supporting role in Birdman (2014)

Tom Cruise

First time nominated in 1990 for best actor in a leading role for Born on the "Fourth of July" (1989) then nominated again for the same category in 1997 for Jerry Maguire (1996). Three years later he was nominated for best actor in a supporting role for Magnolia (1999)

Sigourney Weaver

Her first nomination was in 1987 for the classic sci-fi movie Aliens (1986) for Best actress in a leading role , then in 1989 she was nominated again for best actress in a leading role for Gorillas in the Mist : The Story of Dian Fossey (1988) also in 1989 she was nominated for best actress in a supporting role for Working Girl (1988). With a total of 3 nominations including the classic Aliens Sigourney Weaver needs an Oscar

Julianne Moore

Moore's first nomination was in 1998 for Best actress in a supporting role for Boogie Nights (1997) , then two years later she was nominated for Best actress in a leading role for The End of the Affair (1999).Three years later Moore got 2 nominations in the same year , one for a supporting role in The Hours (2002) and one for a leading role in Far from heaven (2002). While Moore's competition this year is tough she cant definatly win for her Leading role in Still Alice (2014)

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo was nominated for the first time in 1994 for best actor in a supporting role when he was only 19 for Whats eating Gilbert Grape (1993) with fan demanding an Oscar it was sure DiCaprio was going to be an Oscar favorite. Then in 2005 after many great films DiCaprio was nominated for the second time for his best performance of an actor in a lead role in The Aviator (2004) again not winning the Oscar fans were more furious then 2 years later DiCaprio was nominated again for the best performance by an actor in a leading role for Blood Diamond (2006).After winning and being nominated for a few Golden Globes , DiCaprio was nominated for his performance of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street , also sharing another nomination of the best motion picture of the year with Emma Tillinger Koskoff , Joey McFarland and Martin Scorsese for the 5th time , DiCaprio left without the Oscar this time fans demanding his Oscar.

Amy Adams

It is possible that you could call Amy Adams the best performance by an actress queen with all of her nominations being in that category. Adams first nomination was in 2006 for Junebug (2005) , then in 2009 for Doubt (2008) , two years later she was nominated again for The Fighter (2010) , another two years later she was nominated for The Master (2012) , in the following year 2013 she was nominated for American Hustle (2013). Despite 5 nominations and another 47 other wins Amy Adams needs an Oscar.

Peter O'Toole

Ultimatly the king of Oscar nominations, O'Toole's first nomination was in 1963 for best actor in a leading role in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) O'Toole was nominated for best actor in a leading role an incredible 5 more times with films including Becket (1964) nominated in 1965 , The Lion in Winter (1968) nominated in 1969 , Goodbye Mr Chips (1969) nominated in 1970 , The Ruling Class (1972) nominated in 1973 , The Stunt man (1980) nominated in 1981 and My Favourite Year (1982) nominated in 1983.
