In light of the Oscars tonight I wanted to put together an article summarizing some of the best actors who have appeared in the MCU to date.
Sir Anthony Hopkins
Let's first start off with Sir Anthony Hopkins. He has been nominated for a Golden Globe four times and SAG award twice, but has never even been nominated for an Oscar, ever. I was shocked when I found this out in doing my research, especially considering some of the iconic roles he has played - including Alfred Hitchcock and Hannibal Lecter. His appearance in the MCU is as Thor's father, Odin. Although he has only been in a supporting role, he's always been impressive in his scenes.
Robert Redford was a big "get" for [Marvel](channel:932254). He has won two Oscars, although neither as a 'Best Actor' or 'Supporting Actor.' Instead he pulled in one for 'Best Director,' and one for a lifetime achievement award. Actually, The Sundance Kid has only had one 'Best Actor' nomination for the Oscars. He does, however, have three Golden Globe wins and four other nominations under his belt. Some of his best roles include: The Sundance Kid, Roy Hobbs and Jay Gatsby.
Although he has over 150 appearance credits as an actor, Samuel L. Jackson has only one nomination for the Oscars, as 'Best Supporting Actor' for his role as Jewels in Pulp Fiction. Sam also has four Golden Globe nominations. Among his 150+ acting credits, he has appeared in Star Wars, Die Hard, XXX, almost all of the Tarantino films, Coach Carter, and even Snakes on a Plane!
Scarlett is probably the most decorated female in the MCU. Amazingly, she also has not captured an academy award. In fact she doesn't even have a nomination. I was very shocked to discover this, because especially early in her career she was more of an independent film genre actress as opposed to an action star. Her first attempt at breaking into that genre was with The Island in 2005. It wasn't until becoming [Black Widow](movie:1070824) that she really stepped into the blockbuster realm. Instead she racked up four Golden Globe nominations with roles in movies like: Lost In Translation, Match Point, Black Dahlia, The Prestige, The Horse Whisperer and The Other Boleyn Girl.
I must admit, I didn't think Norton was a perfect fit for Bruce Banner, but my reasoning has nothing to do with his acting credentials, as he is an amazing actor. A testament to that are his three Oscar nominations for performances in: Primal Fear, American History X, and recently in Birdman (he could win tonight, at which point I'll update the article). Also under his credit are films like Fight Club and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. actually has two Academy Award nominations for both Chaplin and Tropic Thunder (one of my favorite performances of his. He basically played a male Izzy Azazel). Robert actually has two Golden Globe wins and two more nominations under his belt. Even if you take all that away, he's still a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist! Oh, let's not forget he's also been Sherlock Holmes!
So what do you think guys? Cast your votes below! Did I miss anyone? Let me know in the comments!
Also, a special thanks to everyone who shared my last post to get it to over 10k reads! I feel so blessed!
