Last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries really packed a punch in terms of emotional intensity and undeniably, it was one of the most hard-hitting of the season. In particular, Sheriff Forbes' funeral was a very traumatic episode for Caroline, who had just seen her mother pass away before her very eyes in the episode before that. Relive the tear-jerking scene here:

And whilst we lamented an integral character's passing and finally saw some storylines come to a close, we also got an inkling that some very juicy plot-lines were in store in the second half of the season.

In particular, did you guys take a moment to consider the idea of Matt Donovan and Tyler Lockwood actually joining the police force? It was only mentioned in passing, so it was easily overlooked.

What happened?

During the episode, I got really excited when I heard Matt reveal that he signed himself and his best pal up to be cops. Speaking to Tyler in the episode "Let Her Go," he says:

"The thing is, Ty, I get it, alright? We've all been through so much that it's bound to make us a little crazy. But I was thinking, you know, watching the way all those cops honored her today, I want to be a part of something like that. So I talked to one of the deputies, and he gave me an application. There's this, uh, officer training program. Seems pretty cool, you know, like something I'm supposed to be a part of. I got one for you too."

A pat on the back for Matt, acting on his own initiative!

For one, I think a couple of positive changes would be very good for the Mystic Falls gang, who have been through so much in the recent episodes. Not only do they need suitable distractions, but they also need to start looking forward to a brighter future.

Julie Plec, executive producer of the show, is clearly also thinking in this vein:

“One of the things I loved about this episode tonight was it served as a launching pad for a lot of character shifts; people trying to find their way and what means things to them. [...] And for Matt Donovan to look around and see all these cops paying tribute, and to realize, ‘I need a calling.’ And to be so moved by this calling that he decides to take on this journey, I'm so excited for him to go down this road.”

From this insider statement, it seems that it's pretty much certain that Matt will pursue a career in law enforcement. This is obviously great news for the town too, as since Sheriff Forbes' death, Mystic Falls really does need all the help it can get at keeping the bad guys at bay.

Also, officer Donovan certainly has quite a nice ring to it, don't you think?

Bring on the character development!

Not only is this storyline interesting, but it is also a big step for actor Zach Roerig as it will allow him to increase the depth of his character, finally putting him up there with TVD greats like Damon, Stefan, Caroline and Elena. For so many seasons, Matt has been sidelined to make way for fleeting characters and into merely being a side-kick for the other fang gang members.

I am certainly very excited for this chance for him to shine!

What about Tyler?

Obviously, considering Tyler turned up drunk to Caroline's mom's funeral, perhaps he need to take a step back before he makes any rash career-changing decisions.

Additionally, a life-changing choice like this needs to come from the heart and at the moment, it seems that Matt is the driving force behind Tyler's potential decision. Naturally, he is worried that his friend has a drinking problem but this should not be a reason to become a cop.

Perhaps if he cleans up his act, the two can be just the law enforcement duo that Mystic Falls needs! We can only wait to find out!

What do you guys think?
