I love Harry Potter. I mean, who doesn't? The books were a part of my childhood and so were the movies. While the movies lacked in certain areas, they were still a lot of fun with some really great performances. I miss being excited for the new Harry Potter movie to come out. However one area I felt the series was always lacking in was the video game department. The first few were fun open world games but after that... it all went down hill. None of the games were very fun and I'm not quite sure why. With such an expansive world, Harry Potter has so many possibilities in the world of video games. So, here is my list of ways to bring the Harry Potter franchise back to gaming!
Note: These are in no particular order.
5. Harry Potter MMO
Just imagine it. Creating your own witch or wizard, choosing to fight as a light or dark wizard, being sorted into your own house. You could choose which school you wanted to go to; Durmstrang, Hogwarts, etc. Imagine exploring the school, sneaking out with friends, flying to extreme locations to fight the dark forces of the wizarding world. And Quidditch, guy! DON'T FORGET QUIDDITCH! The game could take place during Harry's time at Hogwarts, before or after. We could all fight against Voldemort or a new evil that a new generation of wizards must rise up against and defeat. I want it already!
4. Harry Potter: Arkham Hogwarts by Rocksteady
Imagine a Harry Potter game that tells the entire story in one play - based on the books, not the movies. Developed by Rocksteady. YEAH, I KNOW. Rocksteady brought legitimacy to the Batman video game franchise. They didn't just make great Batman games, they made great video games in general. I desperately want Rocksteady to do for Harry Potter what they did for Batman. From the Quidditch matches to the duels, the spell combat would be amazing. Give it to me now, Rocksteady!
3. Harry Potter RPG by Bethesda
Bethesda knows their stuff when it comes to fantasy games and action RPGs. The Elder Scrolls series is great and I would love to see them apply that knowledge to the Harry Potter franchise. In the mean time, there is a Skyrim Harry Potter mod for all of you fans out there that want this just as bad as I do.
2. Quidditch World Cup 2016
This game was a lot of fun back in the day, so I can only imagine what it would be like with the power of a modern PC or console. I want a Quidditch game with huge wipeouts, destructible environments, unforeseen weather conditions and unwanted enemies like Dementors coming in to interrupt. Give it to us now, EA. Or, you know, whomever currently holds the Harry Potter license.
1. Harry Potter by Nintendo
15 years ago Nintendo was in talks with J.K. Rowling for the rights to Harry Potter. Nintendo wanted to turn the series into a video game franchise exclusively for their systems. We know, of course, that Rowling ended up selling the rights to Warner Bros. However, I can't help but think about the what ifs. The movies were great and I love that we have them... but I seriously wonder what a Nintendo Harry Potter game would look like. We can only speculate, but I imagine that the game would have looked similar in style to the Legend of Zelda series. Maybe some day Nintendo will be given the rights to make Harry Potter games and we will finally get the game we never knew about. Here's hoping!
