Anticipation for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars reboot has been building to a nigh-unbearable climax, as fans around the world eagerly await the ambitious re-imagining of one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time!
Fan speculation surrounding the project continues to run rampant, with every minute detail and pre-release tid-bit being pored over obsessively for any clues as to what we can expect come December, but now we have a breakthrough! The latest exciting rumor concerns the casting choice of one of the most important Star Wars characters going: Luke Skywalker - and we think we might finally now know who's set to play the legendary Jedi!
WARNING: If you're on a Star Wars fasting-fest and want to avoid any potentially spoilerish information, stop reading now!
Alright, with that out of the way, I present to you your brand new (heavily rumored to be) Luke Skywalker...
I know what you're thinking - 'that's not Mark Hamill!' Yes, while it's true that Hamill will be reprising his role from the original trilogy, Boulter is slated to play a younger Skywalker during a short but "pivotal" flashback sequence.
The news comes from Making Star Wars, who claims to have seen the movie's master character list, confirming the appearance of a post-Return of the Jedi, yet pre-The force Awakens Skywalker, referred to rather brilliantly in the script as 'The Young Original Warrior.'
Obviously, Mark Hamill is now a little too old to play the spritely young Jedi in a flashback scene, leaving J.J. Abrams in search of a fresh new face to fill the crucial role. That face, it seems, is Boulter's.
So Who Is This Guy?
You wouldn't be chastised for not recognizing this face (well, the one on the right at least), the British actor being somewhat of a newcomer to the Hollywood spotlight.
With a background in theater, Boulter has appeared in just three feature films - Mercenaries (2011), Daylight Robbery (2008) and Donkey Punch (2008) - all of which received a limited release.
How Does This Young Luke Fit into the Story?
According to Making Star Wars, the aforementioned flashback scene takes place in a location named 'Rose's Pub,' where Rose recounts her story to Han (Harrison Ford), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega).
The sequence begins with a pile of dead bodies lying on the floor of a Jedi Academy (possibly set up by Luke), before Skywalker shows up and quickly departs after seeing the lifeless remains. A fierce battle follows between two rival factions named the 'Clan' and 'The Seven,' which results in Kylo Ren (the cross guard lightsaber-wielding villain from the trailer) confronting Rey.
For the full scene run down click HERE, though I should warn you that it's pretty indecipherable in its current form. The description seems to be missing an expository voiceover elaborating on the flashback's events in more detail.
Bear in mind, this is all unconfirmed speculation, but it shouldn't be long until we're treated to another juicy official info dump. Abrams is expected to kick off the Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim on April 16, where it's expected he'll reveal some brand new tantalizing footage from The Force Awakens.
What do you think about Robert Boulter as Luke Skywaker? What could this flashback sequence mean, who are 'The Seven' and what's the deal with this Rose character? So many questions!
Is the force strong with this one?
