First off, let me just express how happy I am that the character of Godzilla was finally done some justice with a blockbuster movie. I understand that this film wasn’t as popular as it could have been. I constantly hear the argument, “Godzilla was barely in the movie!” To me that’s part of the magic, but to each his own.

If you preferred this one... you're crazy

Growing up, I was a big fan of the old, dubbed over, movies and loved all the different monsters that Godzilla teamed up with or went up against. So, I’m sure you can guess, if there was one thing that disappointed me with the new film from last summer, it was the lack of these other monsters.

Who doesn't want to see this with better effects?
Who doesn't want to see this with better effects?

That brings me to my alternate ending. I wouldn’t exactly change the ending, as much as I would add to it. I like the way Godzilla returns to the ocean and disappears. That’s perfect. I just wouldn’t end it there.

Here is what I would add:

Godzilla disappears into the ocean. We pan over the wreckage that was caused by the fight between Godzilla and the M.U.T.O.’s. We hear voices argue loudly over how to track and destroy Godzilla as we get a good look at how many lives were destroyed by the fight. Eventually, we cut to a dark room where a bunch of suits continue their argument.

“Godzilla must be destroyed,” a man yells as he pounds his fist into the desk.

Another man tells him to calm down and that he believes that they are all in agreement that he must be destroyed, which sparks more yelling. Finally, we see Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) looking down at the desk as he sits quietly during the debate.

“No,” Dr. Serizawa says quietly, getting visibly upset. “...NO!”

The room goes quiet and all eyes are on him.

“We must track Godzilla, yes, but we cannot destroy him...” Serizawa says. “We may need him again.”

A man stands up and says, “Doctor... you’ve seen the damage. Tell me, what the hell would we need that monster for?”

We cut to a shot of Earth from space, slowly panning out. The moon crawls into the shot. After a few seconds, we see a shadow creep over the moon, followed by the signature roar.... OF KING GHIDORAH! The screen cuts to black.

This scene closes up the movie perfectly. It gives us Nerd-Zillas the hint at another monster and it perfectly sets up a sequel! Honestly, I was shocked that we didn’t get some kind of hint at another well-known monster at the end of this film. I hope they still plan to make a sequel with one as popular as King Ghidorah.

This would be amazing!
This would be amazing!

So what do you think? Should we have seen a hint at King Ghidorah or some other monster at the end of Godzilla?
