Today, it looks like we got some news on the most unnecessary sequel in film history. That's right... [Toy Story 4](movie:335430). The trilogy ended perfectly and cemented itself as one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history, and it looks like Pixar will be milking that cow for a while longer.
After such a perfect trilogy, how are they supposed to continue the franchise? We all thought that it had ended on such a beautiful note. Today, we got an answer to these questions... sort of.
In an interview with Disney Latino, studio President Jim Morris seemed to answer these questions. and shed light on the different direction that this franchise was headed.
"The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. I think this movie is not part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued. Never begin a project with that in mind."
This will not be a continuation... which is a good thing, because I honestly do not know how they could possibly continue the original trilogy. However, it seems like they have left the door open for a sequel, and this could be the start of a new trilogy and a new story, if the box office proves strong enough.
Morris went on to say:
"It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. I think it will be a very good movie."
From the sound of this, it sounds like they won't put much emphasis on Woody and Andy's relationship, which is a cause for concern, if only slightly, since their relationship was such a crucial part of the original trilogy.
However, putting that piece of information to the side, this new angle and direction for the franchise sounds interesting, since they haven't focused much on romance in the previous films. Even though this story will be separate from the previous films, it sounds like they will address the previous films briefly before moving into their new story.
I am ready to give them the benefit of the doubt since the previous three films were absolutely fantastic, and hopefully they take this franchise into a new and exciting direction and potentially revive the franchise. I am hesitant however since I do not want them to ruin this beloved franchise, but their track record gives me hope for this new direction.
