Writing a screenplay is difficult enough but making your own script into a feature length film is even more difficult. This list deals with those writers and directors who do it better than anyone else.

Before we begin here are some honorable mentions who didn't quite make the list.

  • David Lynch Eraserhead, Elephant man, Mullholland Dr.
  • Guillermo Del Toro Pans Labyrinth, Pacific Rim
  • Alfonso Cuaron Children of Men, Y tu mama tambien, Gravity

8. David O'Russell

Famous for recent screenplays such as Sliver Linings Playbook, The Fighter and American Hustle, O'Russell has provided us with some of the greatest movies of the last 5 years. Along with his early work O'Russell is one of the best directors and screenwriters alive at the moment. With his new movie Joy scheduled for release this year starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence the future is bright.

7. Paul Thomas Anderson

PTA has most recently brought us Inherent Vice perhaps most famous for Boogie Nights, There will be blood, Magnolia to name a few. Anderson is well known for his fantastic scripts and even better directing style.


6. Mike Leigh

Although he has never shot a movie from a script. Leigh's style is inspirational, he writes out the bare bones of scenes and works for months with his cast to develop the script through ideas and lengthy sessions often spanning up to six months.

5. Quentin Tarantino

With movies such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown under his belt they more than talk for themselves. Tarantino has successfully created a new genre while making it his own. The only reason he is not higher up on the list is because his best work is behind him but still a magnificent film-maker with nothing to prove.

4. Joel and Ethan Coen

This dynamic sibling duo have bedazzled us with there terrific and witty screenplays and great looking films such as True Grit, No Country for old men and Barton Fink just an example of the brilliant embodiment of work done by the brothers. Except Ladykillers. That was awful.

3.Richard Linklater

Having written the screenplay for almost every film he has done, Rick Linklater has provided us with the finest independent films of the last 20 years or so including Slacker, Dazed and Confused and Waking Life and especially Boyhood. Linklaters style and presence as a film-maker is unique and brilliant.

2. Christopher Nolan

Known for his intelligent blockbusters such as The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and The Prestige. Christopher Nolan consistently performs as a screenwriter and a film director. Also his campaigning to save 35mm and 70mm film is extremely commendable.

One of the things you do as a writer and as a filmmaker is grasp for resonant symbols and imagery without necessarily fully understanding it yourself.

1. Wes Anderson

Famous for his films symmetrical and quirky look his films such as Rushmore, The Dajeeling Limited and Grand Budapest Hotel also have very funny, witty and well thought out dialogue as well as interesting and intriguing characters demonstrating the power of Anderson s film-making.
