A new Avengers star has just been confirmed to appear in [Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409) . Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye was just reported by the Hollywood Reporter to be in the Captain America sequel. Back in September, Renner hinted at the possibility of his character being featured in the film. He'll be starring alongside Chris Evans' Cap, RDJ's Iron Man, Scarlet Johansson's Black Widow, new comer Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther, Anthony Mackie's Falcon, Frank Grillo's Crossbones, and Daniel Bruhl in some mystery role, and possibly (read: very likely) Spider-man.
The largest question on everybody's mind is "Which side will Hawkeye be on?" Hawkeye was not part of the Civil War comic books however he was very critical of Iron Man after the fact. I would put my money on the archer joining Captain America given his reaction in the comic books, his criminal past makes him no outsider to running from the law, and he's a loyal friend to Captain America.
For many fans of the comic book Hawkeye, his inclusion in Civil Way is great news! Many people feel that the onscreen Hawkeye is, well, lame. He spent Avengers being mind controlled. Comic book Hawkeye is fantastic, he's been a part of almost every Avengers team and is the founder of the West Coast Avengers. He was also the first ever deaf super hero, which could correlate into a symbol of hope for many of deaf children around the world. I for one think that up to this point Hawkeye hasn't been utilized to his fullest abilities. Hopefully, we'll see some character devolpment in [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) and even more in Civil War.
Bassically, Hawkeye is my favorite comic book character, he's has yet to be fleshed out fully in the Cinematic Universe, and his inclusion in Civil War gives hope to eventually seeing the West Coast Avengers assemble of the silver screen. This is where I get into some speculation about Hawkeye, his role in both Age of Ultron and [Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409), and Mockingbird set to be on Agents of Shield.
Is the MCU building to the West Coast Avengers?
Hawkeye being featured in more and more films every day is the biggest clue to the West Coast forming. If he has a fall out with Iron Man, and Cap dies at the end of Civil War as he did in the comics, then Hawkeye will be left with out a leader. Iron Man, or any other hero, is perfectly capable of protecting New York (again) so Hawkeye might see the need to move to the West side of the Country. Also, in the comics Hawkeye sets up the West Coast Avengers with his wife, Mocking Bird who is set to appear in the MCU. Finally, Joss Whedon has already confirmed we will be seeing multiple teams of Avengers. Many thought that this could mean the Secert Avengers being set up by Captain America. But I believe that it could also mean that Hawkeye and Mocking Bird form the West Coast Avengers. These are just the biggest hints to the formation of the West Coast Avengers that I thought I'd include in this announcement but stay tuned for a full article exploring the possibilities of 2, 3, 4, or more teams of Avengers that the MCU is building to and the likeliness any of them will happen.
