[Uncharted](movie:583414) 4: A Thief's End is one of the most anticipated titles for 2015. The PS4 exclusive is set to conclude the adventures of Nathan Drake, with The Last of Us' Neil Druckmann at the helm. Considering his background, we may be in for a much darker Uncharted compared with previous entries into the series. This has been evident ever since we've been shown footage from Uncharted 4 .
Therefore, when it comes to the latest development in Nathan Drake's life, a lot of people have become rather suspicious of Nathan's brother Sam, played by Troy Baker. Where has he been all of these years? How did he track down his brother? Did they separate on good terms? There's a lot of things that hint at the fact that these two haven't always seen eye to eye.
Uncharted 4 - Who is Sam Drake?
As we know, Nathan was believed to be an orphan up until this recent revelation, he's referenced that at certain points throughout the series. Now however, it's revealed that he does in fact have a brother. Why was Drake saying that he was an orphan? Was it easier than describing where he was and how they were separated? Did he not want to delve into the pain of the past? Or did he want to remove the memory of his brother from his life for good?
Perhaps their parting wasn't all that pleasant. Certain information has led us to believe that the two brothers went their separate ways after an event that presumedly claimed Sam Drake's life. Nathan carried on afterwards, and has since become an extraordinary success. He has close friends and admirers, has travelled the world and uncovered secrets that many thought were undiscoverable.
Where Has Sam Been All These Years?
Sam Drake is believed to be about 5 years older than his brother. One can imagine how jealous he could be of the success that Nathan has enjoyed over the years. He's succeeded in every facet of life, while Sam's memory drifted away into the past. One teaser we received in 2013 alludes to this jealous grief.
Some chains can never be broken. I lost 15 years; buried alive, erased. You left me rotting in that hellhole and never looked back. But you can't outrun the past, and when it catches up, when all your lies collapse around you, I'll be there, sifting through the wreckage. You owe me.
Could Sam Be a Surprise Antagonist in Uncharted 4?
The 'buried alive' line is telling. Perhaps the two brothers were on an expedition together and Sam became trapped underground. Nathan then believed there was no way that he could have survived, and moved on thinking his brother was dead. Perhaps whatever happened was Nathan's fault.
Uncharted 4 will apparently delve into Nathan's past, a past that has remained rather vague up until this moment. Perhaps the dark nature of the trailers lends us some kind of insight into the tone of this new game. Maybe the arrival of Nathan's brother brings with it the darkness of their past.
"Sam has never really quite moved on, but Nate has; he's found Elena, he's found Sully, he's found his calling." Troy Baker said this about his character of Sam, so it seems that he may be harbouring some deep resentment towards his successful little brother. Therefore, I really feel that Sam is not going to be the loving brother that we're presented with in the PS4 gameplay trailer.
Do you guys agree? Or do you feel that he'll simply be a nice guy that can share some banter and competition with his brother? Be sure to let us know in the comments! Uncharted 4 and Naughty Dog have yet to reveal its release date for the PS4, but hopefully we don't have long to wait!
