As was announced earlier this year, Paul Feig - the mastermind behind 2011's terrifically fun Bridesmaids - will take charge to direct a female-led Ghostbusters reboot, starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
But the men aren't about to let the women have all the fun! Deadline reports that Sony has just pushed a second, more male-focused movie into development, designed to act as a complementary counterpart to Wiig's project. What's even more exciting, is that this second franchise reboot will be helmed by none other than hunky Hollywood heavyweight...
That's right, the golden boy of the hour is primed to produce as well as star as one of the all-new male ghostbusters, with his behind-the-scenes collaborator Reid Carolin (Magic Mike) on board to help quell all the strange somethings in your neighbourhood.
Though exciting, the news doesn't come as a wholly unexpected surprise. As a result of the widespread Sony hacks last year, a leaked email exchange revealed Tatum's desire to strap on a proton pack and develop his own take on the cult classic franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt was also rumored to be involved at that time, though there's been no new word on Star-Lord's role as yet.
Marvel pedigree get to work on busting ghosts
But don't worry, Tatum isn't the only talent attached to the long-awaited (second) reboot - Captain America: Civil War directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, are hoping to take charge, while Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce will handle the screenplay.
In fact, Sony is so invested in the project, they've founded an entirely new production company called Ghost Corps, headed up by the franchise's original brain trusts, Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd.
From the looks of all this investment, the studio seems to be resolutely committed to revitalizing Ghostbusters into a globe-spanning property, with producer Reitman outlining their ambitious plans:
We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment.
Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year [sic]. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.
Who knows what will happen when Sony crosses those cross-media streams, but I can't wait to find out!
On the off chance that you're harboring any niggling doubts about Channing's involvement (and why would you, it's Channing-f*cking-Tatum!), here are 6 reasons why he's the perfect man for the job!
1. He was downright hilarious in 21 and 22 Jump Street
Channing has already proven his comedic chops and would be perfectly suited to the franchise's spirited sense of humor.
2. He wants to make it like Batman
Tatum sent the following email to Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal, likening his vision for the reboot to Batman Begins:
Let us show the world The DarkSide and let us fight it with all the glory and epicness of a HUGE BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE. I know we can make this a huge franchise. Fun adventure craziness. COME OONNNN!!!
Just think about it: Tatum + Ghostbusters + Batman = mind blown!
3. He doesn't take himself too seriously
Remind you of a certain Peter Venkman?
4. He's already won at science
So I'm sure he could design the team some kick-ass new weapons!
5. He looks great in costume
I can't wait to see him in the iconic Ghostbusters threads!
6. He can do this...
...which makes him perfect for just about anything.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for Tatum to strap on a proton pack, or does Wiig's all-female squad do it for you?
Which Ghostbusters reboot are you most looking forward to?
