Based on the 1970 film of the same name, M*A*S*H was a big deal during its 11 year run on television. It has featured on more 'Greatest Television Show Ever' lists than I can even begin to collate, while the final episode in particular, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen," was the most watched and highest rated television show episode in US history at the time.
In fact, so many people watched the finale, the New York City Sanitation and Public Works Department reported parts of their plumbing system broke down. This is believed to be due to the fact everyone waited until the end of the episode to use the toilet. In the three minutes after the episode finished, 77% of New York City flushed their toilets.
M*A*S*H also featured an incredibly large cast list, including some names which would later become extremely well-known. Here is what some of the principle cast, and others, have been up to since M*A*S*H ended in 1983.
Alan Alda - Captain Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce
Fun Fact: Alan Alda would later appear in the hospital television drama series, ER, as a doctor who would frequently reminiscence about his time in the army medical corps - obviously referencing his role in M*A*S*H.
What Else Can I See Him In? Canadian Bacon (1995), ER (1999), The Aviator (2004), The West Wing (2004-2006), The Blacklist (2013-2014)
Loretta Swit - Major Margaret Houlihan
Fun Fact: Although, it is often claimed Loretta Swit and Alan Alda were the only characters to appear in all 251 episodes of M*A*S*H, this is only because Swit was officially contracted to. However, in reality, she does not appear in the episode "Hawkeye."
What Else Can I See Her In? The Love Boat (1977-1984), Beer (1985), Batman: The Animated Series (1992), Beach Movie (1998). Swit retired from acting in 1998.
Jamie Farr - Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger
Fun Fact: Klinger was known for occasionally dressing up in women's clothes, however this joke was slowly phased out because Jamie Farr did not want his children, who were young at the time, to be teased about it at school.
What Else Can I See Him In? After MASH (1983-1984), Scrooged (1989), Cannonball Fever (1989), This World (2013)
William Christopher - Father Francis Mulcahy
Fun Fact: Hawkeye, Major Margaret Houlihan and Father Mulchay are the only characters to carry from the original movie all the way through to the end of the series. George Morgan temporary took over the role in the television series pilot, however Christopher was brought in to replace him later.
What Else Can I See Him In? After MASH (1972-1983), The Love Boat (1981-1984), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1997), Days of Our Lives (2012)
M*A*S*H also included many household name actors in minor roles. Many of them were at the beginnings of their careers and played background roles for only a single episode. Unfortunately, many of the roles were so minor, there are no images online, with the above exception of Leslie Nielsen as Col. Buzz Brighton.
Other big name actors who appeared in M*A*S*H in minor roles, include Lawrence Fishburne, Ron Howard, Patrick Swayze, John Ritter, George Wendt and Joe Pantoliano.
