For some time now there has been much speculation about DC's plans for [Green Lantern](movie:593221) .
Which version of the Green Lantern will be used in DC's Cinematic Universe? Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner...
Who will play the hero? Recently, Star Trek actor Chris Pine has been linked to the role of Jordan, but actor Tyrese Gibson and rapper Common have expressed interest in portraying Stewart. Previous to these, we have heard countless other rumours, even including a female version of character played by Michelle Rodriguez.
What if we have been asking the wrong questions? Everyone seems so determined to work out whether we will be seeing Hal Jordan or John Stewart on screen that nobody has considered that we may see both. Yes, BOTH, together!
Many people don't know this, but when John Stewart was introduced into DC Comics back in 1972 he was Hal Jordan's backup Green Lantern. Stewart, a Veteran US Marine and Architect, was selected by The Guardians, the oldest living beings in the Universe and founders of the Green Lantern Corps., to act as the replacement Lantern of Jordan should anything happen to him.
Initially, Jordan objected to the choice due to Stewart's disregard for authority. Jordan and Stewart's first assignment involved protecting a racist politician. Stewart used this opportunity to humiliate the politician in question. This was a decision Jordan did not agree with. However, Stewart uncovered the politician's plot to stage a foiled assassination attempt by a black assassin on his own life, and gained Jordan's respect, and friendship.
Since then, Stewart has had an integral role in the Green Lantern Universe. He has acted as backup for Jordan while he attended missions with the Justice League, taken over as a full time Lantern when Jordan hung up the Ring and was even accused of killing Carol Ferris, Jordan's love interest.
In the original Green Lantern Corps., there was one Green Lantern assigned to every space sector. This meant there were 3,600 Green Lanterns at one time, protecting the reaches of outer space. Then The Guardians ruled that there should be two protectors for every sector: 7,200 Lanterns.
The Guardian's further ruled that heavily populated space sectors, such as Space Sector 2814 (which contains Earth), could have more than two Green Lanterns. This explains why, in the comics, Earth has been home to some of the greatest Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Kyle Rayner who is the only known Lantern to have wielded the entire emotional spectrum, Guy Gardner who is half man and half Vuldarian.
It seems logical for DC's Cinematic Universe to follow in these footsteps. This gives them a chance to expand, and delve deeper into the Lantern Universe itself. Furthermore, it would bring two beloved characters to screen, and please a huge portion of the DC fan-base. After all, who wouldn't be happy by one of them appearing in the Green Lantern Reboot, let alone two? Who's to say that they will stop there? Perhaps Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner will be introduced too!
It is unlikely DC will introduce Green Lantern into the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice if they want to develop his origin story fully. We may get an appearance of Jordan or Stewart pre-costume though. It is likely we will see a fully-suited Lantern appear in Justice League Part 1 (2017) or Justice League Part 2 (2019) as he is such an important member of the team. If he is to appear in costume before the Green Lantern film (2020) then perhaps this means the film will be a prequel origin story? Maybe his origin will be explored in either of the Justice League films? We can't be sure yet.
So what do you think? Do you think DC will push for Hal Jordan AND John Stewart to appear together? Would you like to see two Lanterns? Would you like to see more?
