It’s been almost 4 years since we last saw Po and his friends on the big screen and today we’ve got new details on what’s in store for our favorite Kung Fu Panda when he arrives in theaters early next year! The last we heard anything about Kung Fu Panda 3 was back in December when it was announced its release date would be moved from this December to March 2016 in order to avoid the juggernaut that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but thanks to a recent issue of Toy World, via Rotoscopers, we’re getting some new details on the sequel.
According to the trade, Kung Fu Panda 3 will focus on Po facing off against two epic, but very different threats; one supernatural and one closer to home. He will return to his birthplace and reunite with his biological father, voiced by new cast member Bryan Cranston. He soon realizes he no longer fits in and discovers that he’s been promised to a panda named, Mei Mei, voiced by Rebel Wilson. Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen will play the main villain in the film, an evil spirit called “The Collector” who is able to steal the powers of the Kung Fu Masters he defeats. In addition to Cranston, Wilson and Mikkelsen, recent Oscar winner J.K. Simmons will reportedly also have an unknown role in the film.
Dreamworks Animation’s Phil Craven recently posted a picture of the actor in a recording session for the film. You can get a glimpse of his character in the monitor next to him.
Kung Fu Panda 3 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 18th, 2016, but we may not have to wait too long for our first look. According to several reports, a teaser trailer introducing Rebel Wilson’s “Mei Mei” and a young panda named “Bao” will play in front of Dreamworks’ next release, Home, which arrives in theaters in just a couple weeks on March 27th.
