When I left the cinema having seen Gore Verbinski's truly terrifying horror classic The Ring, I developed a deep and paranoid fear of VHS tapes (all forms of antiquated technology scare me, to tell the truth) - but I remained curious as to the mysterious origins of that dreaded video...

Luckily, the upcoming 3D sequel - titled Rings - is here to drop some franchise knowledge bombs on us, because it will actually be a prequel to the original movie!

Bloody Disgusting reports that:

the new The Ring is actually a prequel, and takes place before the 2002 remake that starred Naomi Watts as a woman uncovering the mystery behind a haunted VHS tape. Rings will take place years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.

What we will we discover about the truly terrifying video tape that started it all?

We won't have to wait too long to find out. Acclaimed Spanish director F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) is in charge of the latest trauma-filled installment, which is set for release on November 13 this year.

In the mean time, why not check out the short film 'Rings', included on the DVD re-release of the original movie:
