Recently my husband and I were talking with our daughter when he made a movie reference that went totally over her head, and that got us talking about movies that we grew up with that she really needs to watch.
We came up with so many movies from the 80's and 90's that have special memories for us. Watching Flash Gordon or Ice Pirates with my dad on Sunday afternoons, my mom taking me to see the Last Unicorn, and I dare you to find someone who grew up in the 80's that doesn't know the Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles.
Other films that should be a part of a child's cinematic education are the ongoing franchises like Aliens, Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Terminator. Also anything remade, such as Red Dawn, Tron, and Footloose; I think they should watch the original first. Same for reboots like Mad Max and Ghostbusters.
Here is a list of 10 of the most referenced 80's movies:
- Princess Bride
- Ferris Bueller's Day Off
- Die Hard
- The Shining
- A Christmas Story
Some of these aren't meant for children, but as soon as she is old enough she will finally understand "I'll be back" and "Say hello to my little friend".
