[Captain America: Civil War](movie:994409), in my opinion, will be extremely important for an introduction into Phase 4. For now though we will touch on what we can possibly expect to see in the upcoming movie.
Since the announcement of Golden Globe Award nominee, Daniel Bruhl, being cast for the role of Baron Zemo (who will probably be the main villain in Captain America: Civil War), my brain has been in a state of fan-boy meltdown. Till that point, I was as doubtful as any Marvel Fan would be on how they'd manage to pull off the movie, and I had a lot of puzzle pieces that would not quite fit (mainly because a lot of key characters were missing from the MCU). Then comes Zemo, and although him being a part of the movie is not what you might call canon, it made a lot of sense nonetheless.
Where am I going with this?
Well, in the post credits scene of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' we are introduced to Baron Strucker, who is talking to a fellow Hydra member. We then see the not so related twins, [Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch](movie:1081109) in their holding cells. This is then followed by an extended scene of Bucky Barnes reconnecting the dots of his distorted past. Watch it below:
Now, assuming that Hydra are somewhat weakened after the events of Age of Ultron, I can imagine Baron Zemo will usurp Baron Strucker in the movie, and thus give birth to a new Hydra under his control. Captain America and Iron Man will hopefully be fighting each other over the Superhuman Registration Act, enforced by the government as a result of the destruction caused during Age of Ultron. Perhaps they'll be too busy to realize the threat of Zemo, who will most likely team up with Crossbones (also confirmed for the movie). The two would mass up an army of Hydra soldiers, armed with weapons that were kept secret from S.H.I.E.L.D. at the time of exposure in The Winter Soldier. If we are lucky, we may even get to hear Zemo's legendary speech featured in the comic 'Undercover Avengers Vol. 1 #10' :
"Please pardon the intrusion, my name is Baron Zemo and I'll only take a moment of your time. I can imagine what you all must be thinking. I know how this looks. The dastardly villain seizes control of the global communication network. Pops up on screens across the globe. Threatening some unspeakable act of violence. Holding the world hostage from afar. But rest assured, that's not what this is. There is no Death Star. No Alderaan for me to blow up. Lord Vader I am not. You see, I didn't hack into your communications network... I hacked into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s...."
And then someone will be injured (most likely Captain America), which would then open the door for Winter Soldier to don the alter ego. This will give Steve Rogers much needed time to recover so that he could hopefully return for both Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2; they just have to include him in the final showdown against the Mad Titan, Thanos!
With that out of the way, we can turn our attention to the Black Panther who will be making his debut to the MCU in Civil War. While his role to play in the movies outcome has not yet been revealed, I think the direction so far might suggest the formation of an all 'villain' team to battle against the Avengers in 'Infinity War Part 1'. This team would directly involve the Black Panther's arch enemy, Ulysses Klaw who as we now know, will make his debut appearance in Age of Ultron.
Which team are we talking about?
None other than the Masters of Evil, and I really hope this comes to fruition in the form of a temporarily defeated Baron Zemo, declaring to an injured Captain America or Tony Stark, "You will know Evil!", and then end Civil War with a post credits scene that would make every Marvel fan-boy's lungs explode.
This version of the Masters of Evil would also, most likely, stray away from the canon team, and include members from each of the teams assembled so as to introduce Spider-Man into the universe. They would be a good match for the Avengers, perhaps even killing one of the members (I hope it's Hawkeye), only for them to form an alliance with all of the MCU heroes to battle against Thanos, and thus end the long anticipated Phase 3.
Where to from here? Enter Phase 4 and Beyond...
After Infinity War Part 2, Marvel will most likely give attention to their lesser known teams, but this still leaves me with a question: Will we ever see a live action adaption of the Thunderbolts?
James Gunn has metioned that he'd like to make the movie, and with Baron Zemo already in the picture we have all we would need for a catalyst. Zemo was one of the original founding members of the team after all, and let's not forget the addition of Spidey's foes Doc Ock and Venom, who would be perfect for the movie. I think if the sequel to [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073) is as much of a success as the first, James Gunn might just get what he wants. Here's to that!!
With Captain America: Civil War set for release on 6 May 2016, we can let our imaginations run wild till then.
