As much as there has been wave after wave of rumors and plot leaks surrounding [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](movie:711158), very little of these potential spoilers involved the mysterious role that Max von Sydow has been cast in. Exactly who this legendary actor will be playing in Star Wars 7 is something that has remained more or less in the shadows.
A Legendary Character
From the earliest and more reliable reports, Max von Sydow is playing a character that is quite crucial to getting the story in motion. Most reports have him playing an old man who has many cybernetic elements keeping him going. He may be a looney but when Luke's lightsaber shows up at the junk shop where he and Daisy Ridley's character spends most of their time, he comes to life - recognising the importance of this object.
In the midst of a huge plot leak that ended up on Reddit, information about Max von Sydow's character placed him as being a character that die hard Star Wars characters would surely be familiar with. Immediately people were guessing everything from him being a Boba Fett that cheated death to the Jedi master Sifo-Dyas and even the original series character Loban. None of these seemed to track.
Star Wars Rebels
But more and more along the way to Star Wars Episode 7, reports continued to appear that this new Star Wars universe that Disney now has control over was all going to inter-connect and expand and that this plan included Star Wars Rebels playing a part in the story of Star Wars 7. Just as Disney and Marvel have done by integrating television shows with the larger MCU, it makes obvious sense that Disney and Star Wars would do the same thing.
An interesting interview with Star Wars actor John Morton makes a good case that the Star Wars Rebels show will provide a lead in to Star Wars Episode 7 the same way that those numerous books that were recently announced would fill in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. We are fairly certain that the Inquisitors will be playing a big part in Episode 7 - so wouldn't it make sense that some other pieces of Rebels will also make it into the movie?
The Last Padawan
This leads us to the most obvious choice of who Max von Sydow could be playing if we take into consideration Rebels as well as the Star Wars comic book line that is currently going full steam ahead. Could Max von Sydow be playing Kanan Jarrus, the Last Padawan? I think it is perhaps the best guess that is out there right now and it would certainly make a good amount of Star Wars fans extremely happy.
Kanan is not only a major player in the Rebels storyline but that character is also getting his own Star Wars comic book title which will see the release of "Kanan – The Last Padawan #1" on April 1st. If Star Wars Episode 7 really will be trying to tie the whole Star Wars universe together, Kanan Jarrus would be the perfect character to bring the Clone Wars and Rebels into the ongoing story.
Not only do obvious things like age and synergy with other Disney and Star Wars properties make sense, but the character has always been surrounded by rumors of being a force sensitive character if not an old Jedi master himself. It is the reason that his character recognizes Luke Skywalker's lightsaber and sets the whole story of [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](movie:711158) into motion.
What do you think? Is there a better character that you would rather see Max von Sydow's character revealed to be?
