Whether you remember Honey, I Shrunk the Kids because it made you want to eat a cookie as big as a house or because it had you crying when their ant died, the 1989 film is just one of those movies that almost every kid has seen at least once.
Over 25 years ago, Wayne Szalinski, a quirky inventor, shrunk his and his neighbor's children. This, of course, leads both the kids and adults on a wild ride of magnifying glasses and gigantic Cheerios. The cast and crew traveled all the way to Mexico City to film some carefully scaled practical effects.
Wayne Szalinski - Rick Moranis
The hilarious and beloved Rick Moranis played Wayne Szalinski, the eccentric, inventor and father that everyone loved, well, except for his neighbors at first. At the height of his career, Moranis retired from acting to raise his children after his wife sadly passed away from breast cancer. After 1997 he's mainly stuck to voice acting work. In 2005 he released a country album titled The Agoraphobic Cowboy, and a second album, My Mother's Brisket & Other Love Songs, in 2013.
For more of Moranis’ story, we’ve written an entire piece on the actor that you can check out here.
Diane Szalinski - Marcia Strassman
Marcia acted as Diane, the stressed out, but always loving, wife of Wayne. She reprised her role in the 1992 sequel Honey I Blew Up the Kid and the 1994 3D film spin-off film Honey, I Shrunk the Audience! Then, amongst other roles, she played Nancy Sterngood in the Sci-Fi channel's show Tremors: The Series. Strassman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and sadly passed away last October at the age of 66.
Amy Szalinski - Amy O’Neill
Amy O'Neill played the pretty and popular older Szalinski child, conveniently named Amy. After Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Amy reprised her role as the character in the sequel, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid but didn't have any major acting roles after losing interest around 1994. Today, Amy reportedly works as a circus artist in Los Angeles. She's toured Italy, Asia, and all around the United States. Check out the video below to see her in action:
Nick Szalinski - Robert Oliveri
Amy's younger brother Nick was played by the adorkable Robert Oliveri. This bespectacled youth shared his inquisitive mind and love of inventing with his father. Following Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Oliveri took on the role of Winona Ryder's younger brother in Edward Scissorhands and then Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and the 4D spinoff movie Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. Oliveri quit acting in 1994. He went on to attend Oglethorpe University in Georgia, and according to last reports he lives in Florida with his wife and children.
Little Russ Thompson - Thomas Wilson Brown
Thomas Wilson Brown played the role of the short, but cute boy next door Little Russ Thompson. Even though he was shy and didn't like football, he capture the hearts of audiences by being a total sweetheart. Twenty-five years later, he's still pretty much a babe and he's a not so "little" anymore. He played Gerald Howells in Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael and Jason Lochner in Knots Landing. He's also had various roles in TV shows such as 90210, E.R., and CSI.
Ron Thompson - Jared Rushton
Ron Thompson was Little Russ' little brother. Sure, he was kind of annoying, but he had a big heart deep down. After playing Ron, Jared only had a few more notable roles. His most notable role was playing bully, Clyde Parker, in Pet Sematary II. Rushton hasn't been in anything since 2000, but reportedly played guitar in a band called Withdrawl.
Big Russ Thompson - Matt Frewer
Matt Frewer played the Szalinski's fishing and camping-loving neighbor Big Russ Thompson. Following Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Frewer has had probably the most steady acting career. Amongst other roles, people will likely recognize him as Moloch in Watchmen, Mitch in 50/50 and, most recently, Dr. Aldous Leekie in [Orphan Black](series:785016). He's also had various voiceover roles including Panic in Disney's Hercules. Frewer has been married since 1984 and they have one daughter together.
Mae Thompson - Kristine Sutherland
Another recognizable face was Kristine Sutherland playing Big Russ Thompson's wife Mae. She's gone on to appear on numerous TV shows like One Life to Live and The Following, but people will know her best as playing Joyce Summers, Buffy's mom, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 1997 to 2002. Sutherland is married to John Pankow who stars as Mec Lapidus on Episodes, the couple has one daughter.
I just watched the movie recently and I'll be honest, it holds up! If you're looking to relive some of those late '80s childhood memories, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a good go-to film. Now if only I could get my hands on a cookie the size of a house. Some dreams never die, I guess.
