It has been a year since [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) came to an end and we all (momentarily) lost faith in the future of television. But after ups and downs and plenty of missteps, some shows have stepped up that can take its place in our rom-com deprived lives.
I've tried out a few duds, but the following are my picks for the best replacement shows for those of us still suffering from HIMYM withdrawal.
Jay and Mark Dupall, the incredibly talented brothers that have written, produced and directed [Togetherness](series:947930) , have created a wonderful new series that has so far shown a load of potential. While it has a more dower vibe than our beloved HIMYM, it has shown its funny side a few times and I feel it is worthy of consideration as a replacement.
Mark Dupall not only created the show, he also stars as the male lead, Brett Pierson, who is married to the lovely Michelle (Melanie Lynskey). But, the pair are having troubles - that are undoubtedly exacerbated by the two guests that have taken up residence on their sofas.
Although the main couple won't provide viewers with kooky relationships adventures like those we enjoyed in HIMYM, Tina, played by Amanda Peet, is a bit of a wild one and her believable and nicely developed relationship with fellow sofa-dweller Alex, played superbly by Steve Zissis, is looking like an interesting basis for some entertaining exploits.
If you begin watching the show and find after the first couple of episodes it begins to stall, please continue on until episode 5 when the stifled adults all head to the park to play kick the can. This episode completely restored my faith in the show.
New Girl (post Jess and Nick's break up)
When the long awaited coupling of Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) occurred at the end of season 2, [New Girl](movie:781595) seemed to lose its way.
After waiting so long thinking will they/won't they, it seemed like a bit of a letdown when they did and the jokes began to dry up.
Like many other [New Girl](movie:781595) viewers, I had my doubts about sticking with the show in season 3 and, to be honest, it was only Winston and Schmidt that kept me coming back.
This reminds me of Friends in many ways, and [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) did have similar low-points when couples got a bit too cosy.
So, when Nick and Jess broke up in season 3 I was rapt and the writers did not disappoint! All of a sudden, the show became a proper ensemble comedy and Cece, Schmidt, Coach and Winston began to get their time to shine.
While [New Girl](movie:781595) may never reach the heights of [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) , if you haven't watched it yet, or stopped after the awkward coupling occurred, give it a go. I don't think you'll be disappointed!
If you haven't heard about [Broad City](series:1225960) yet, you need to get on it!
While it may seem like an odd suggestion as a replacement for sugar-coated, family-friendly [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) , it has a similar kind of 'friends on the loose in Manhattan' vibe that I think we can all appreciate. Plus, it is downright hilarious!
Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have created a comedy that allows them to show off their comedic chops and have a ball, while also inviting brilliant ensemble members such as Hannibal Buress (who plays Lincoln) and Arturo Castro (playing the adorable Jaime) to come along and add to the laughs and nutty escapades!
My one major complaint in HIMYM was that Ted was, for me, a terribly irritating lead. After watching him awkwardly develop throughout the nine seasons, I'm ready to enjoy a series that embraces confident, independent women that put themselves out there and don't constantly discuss their neurotic tendencies.
Plus, the guest stars are just as brilliant as those we enjoyed in [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) ! Seth Rogen, Kelly Ripa, as well as executive producer Amy Poehler guest starring in season one and Fred Armisen dropping by for a cameo role.
The Big Bang Theory
[The Big Bang Theory](series:200751) is often mentioned as a replacement for [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) , and although I added it to this list, I just don't see it.
While TBBT is amusing and features a bunch of friends living and hanging out together, it just doesn't have the same appeal as the others shows I've included.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the show, it just doesn't fit the bill as a proper replacement for HIMYM. It doesn't have the same escapades or trials for its cast to endure and has a very different vibe that strays too far from the rom-com atmosphere of HIMYM.
What do you think? Have you been missing [How I Met Your Mother](series:200728) ? If so, what have you found helpful in curing your cravings?
