"Insurgent" is the second film in the popular "Divergent" series of Young Adult Novel adaptations.

THE FRANCHISE

This is the first of three sequels to the film "Divergent" which released on 21st March 2014 to a opening weekend of $54 Million, it went on to gross $288 Million worldwide, the sequel is expected to do much better at the box office.

The "Divergent" novels first appeared in 2011 by author Veronica Roth, the movie rights were picked up by Summit Entertainment.

THE WORLD

"The Divergent Series" like a lot of YA stories takes place in a post apocalyptic world, which has been split into factions. This story takes place in the ruined city of Chicago. The city is now a crumbling and worn wasteland. When the city was mainly restored, a large fence was put around the perimeter, the fence is guarded at all times.

The society has been split into five different factions which all have a unique value; Abnegation (Selflessness), Dauntless (Bravery), Erudite (Intelligence), Candor (Honesty) and Amity (Peacefulness). Abnegation has control over the government, Dauntless guard the society, Erudite educate and improve the city, Candor specialize in law and Amity maintain farms and the city's supply of food.

As well as the five factions there are the 'factionless', these are essentially homeless people who don't belong to a group. They either failed initiation or chose to live like this.

WHAT IS "DIVERGENT"?

A Divergent is a person that when tested proves positive for more than one faction, our protagonist, Tris, is a Divergent. She proves positive for Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. She picks Dauntless. A "Divergent" is considered a threat to society.

TRIS

Tris played by Shailene Woodley grew up in Abnegation, her father was on the ruling council. After testing positive for three factions, Tris picks Dauntless at the choosing ceremony.

Her training was split into two parts, a physical test and a mental test. The physical aspect is to get her ready to protect the city, the mental aspect of training involves being hooked up to a chair and being subjected to your worst possible fears through a hallucinogen.

During her time in Dauntless, Tris learns that one of her new friends, Four, is also a Divergent.

JEANINE

Jeanine is the franchises antagonist, she is the leader of Erudite and her mission is to hunt the Divergent's to bring back order to the society. She's a power thirsty woman who desires to rule the city.

Tris and Four lead the charge to stop Jeanine and her plans to overthrow the current government. After defeating Jeanine for the firs time, the two leave the city.

THE CAST

The film surprisingly has a very good cast.

Shailene Woodley first showed us her talents in the spectacular "THE DESCENDANTS" in which she shared screen time with George Clooney and still managed to impress. Shailene's most critically acclaimed film was 2013's "THE SPECTACULAR NOW" which also starred Miles Teller, who is also a star of the Divergent series.

Oscar Winner Kate Winslet plays Jeanine, the woman hunting down Divergent's in hope of one day ruling over the city.

The cast has expanded in the sequel, with acting greats such as Octavia Spencer and Naomi Watts joining the cast.

PRODUCTION

After the moderate success of last years "Divergent", Summit Entertainment announced that an adaptation of the sequel will be coming in the next year. In late 2013, just before the release of the first film, the studio announced that the director Neil Burger, would not be returning for the sequel. Instead "R.I.P.D" director Robert Schwentke would be helming the sequel. After the release of the first film, it was revealed that most of the cast from the first film will be returning for the sequel, it was also announced that Octavia Spencer would also be joining.

The film hits theaters this week; March 19th in the UK and March 20th in the US. It is expected to reach around $65-$75 Million on its opening weekend in North America alone. Unlike the first film, Insurgent will be shown in Real D 3D and IMAX 3D.

WHATS NEXT FOR THE FRANCHISE?

In early 2014, about a month after the first films release, Summit announced that the third book in the franchise will be adapted into two separate films. This of course happened because this way the studio makes twice as much money. Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games have all done this with the final stories in their franchises.

The first part, The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1, will be released on March 18, 2016 while the second part, The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 2, on March 24, 2017.

"Insurgent" director Robert Schwenkte will return to direct "Allegiant: Part 1"

CRITICAL RESPONSE

The first film opened to very mixed reviews, some really disliking the film, whilst others not feeling it was as bad as they expected. No critics really praised the film, gaining it a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, still making it a "Rotten" film with an average score of 5.4/10.

The first film has suffered from much more negative reviews, currently standing at a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 4.9/10. Almost every critic has praised Shailene Woodley as being the standout in this franchise, elevating what would be a very bad couple of films.

"The Divergent Series: Insurgent" opens this weekend in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. My review for the film will be up in the next couple of days! Are you guys excited for "INSURGENT" or were you let down by the first film? Let me know down below in the comments!
