Having explored the potential for The Last of Us 2 to move, not only beyond the borders of Joel and Ellie's relationship, but the borders of America too, fans have been wonderful in sharing their thoughts. [The Last of Us](movie:1190382) was an extraordinary experience on the PS3, and still is after its PS4 release date. But how exactly can Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann expand upon what they've already given us?
For me personally, the conclusion to TLOU, is perfect. The game was not only about the relationship between two people, but the exploration of our own humanity. How far are we prepared to go for the ones we love? What is right and what is wrong, and do we all have a darkness inside of us? It asked these questions while exploring the concept of a blockbuster hero and his deeply humanistic and selfish desires.
Of course, Joel and Ellie, were an essential aspect of The Last of Us and inherently part of the game's success. But that's not to say that Naughty Dog haven't established a setting and set of ideals that can be explored with other characters. But would it be TLOU for you if Joel and Ellie weren't in The Last of Us 2 on its PS4 release date?
Is it The Last of Us 2 Without Joel & Ellie?
As always, I love to hear the opinions of fans on franchises such as The Last of Us, and believe me when I say it, TLOU is a franchise. This setting will be explored once more, but the question is how and where? Will it pick up directly after the screen cut to black? Will it jump forward another 20 years?
But once I mentioned the idea of TLOU 2 moving to Europe and away from Joel and Ellie, fans thought it just didn't feel right. The duo are an essential part of this world. Many have a deep desire to see what happens to them over the years, with almost everyone saying that we should play as Ellie in the sequel for the entire campaign.
I love that idea, don't get my wrong, we've even discussed how a sequel would look with Joel's increased paranoia taking hold, and Ellie at the helm. I'm just worried that they're not exactly franchise characters and that their impact will become diluted over time if they keep appearing as leads in sequels. Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series has a very different blockbuster appeal, he's made for franchises. But are Joel and Ellie?
Where would you like to see The Last of Us 2 go on its PS4 release date? Would you be disappointed if Joel and Ellie weren't in it? Got any ideas of what the sequel should look like? Then be sure to let us know in the comments! TLOU 2 will happen people, but with Uncharted 4 delayed, we may be waiting for quite some time!
