Here's a few pics I have kinda showing the process of how I made this piece. I wish I had more to show for the process. My next piece I will take more pics! What I do first is create a basic outline of the portrait using graphite paper. Next I start doing some light shading in certain areas to start to get the shape of the face, and blocking in some areas with dark shading. Once I have a basic image of the facial features, then its time to build up the tones to create different textures and build up the depth in the tentacles. This particular portrait took me about a week to complete. Slow process but definitely worth it in the end!
