Lee Howard is a self-taught artist who specializes in portraits, horror, and pop art. He grew up and lives just outside of Toronto, Ontario and only in the last 10 years or so has he made art his main focus in life. Lee has built himself a loyal international fan base via his Facebook page and currently has 24,000 + followers and growing! While Lee does accept specialized orders, his main focus is on horror and pop art.
Lee has recently been working with 'Horror Block' (a mystery pop culture subscription box company) and has a (hopefully) short term goal to have one of his prints included in each monthly issue!
Alongside his paintings, Lee is the creator of the 'Quiet Room Bears,' which are known worldwide for their creepy and unique appearances. He first created the Quiet Room Bears approximately 14 years ago and has numbered every one of the 200+ bears he has since made. Each bear he makes is a new creation, as he never ever makes duplicates - some are movie and character themed (Freddy vs Jason, Hellraiser, Scream), while others are made with different random props such as doll faces and teeth for creepy effect. A few of the bears are even animatronic and can speak, which makes them all the more disturbing for a true horror fan and collector.
Lee has met some amazing people through his Quiet Room Bears and has sold his unique toys to horror fans and famous actors/singers all over the world. Several celebrities such as Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2), Lezlie Deane (Freddy's Dead), The 'Twisted Twins' Sylvia and Jen Soska (American Mary, See No Evil 2) and Marilyn Manson own a slice of horror heaven in the form of a Quiet Room Bear.
In 2011, Lee was invited by Mark Patton (Jesse from Nightmare 2) to be his featured artist at the 'Rock and Shock' convention outside of Boston and sit with and display the bears with him - the reception they got was incredible. The Quiet Room Bears have also partnered with the Toronto After Dark Film Festival to create their official mascot 'TADdy,' as well as working this past December with Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada to create a Black Christmas (1974) inspired Quiet Room Bear - which was presented at the 40th Anniversary Screening of the classic film!
Lee is currently working on a screenplay titled 'The Quiet Room,' which will focus on a back story for his popular bears
Lee has also branched out in creating The Playful Dead Minis - 4" or 5" custom vinyl figures, hand painted to recreate his versions of famous monsters, comic characters and other heroes, villains and pop icons from movies and TV! There is now an incredibly vast range of figures for sale, ranging from classics like Doctor Who, Chucky and The Joker to lesser known characters such as Dwight from The Office, Frank the Rabbit and Blackest Night Batman.
Some of my favorite pieces I have done are the 2 PSYCHO paintings (pictured at the top of this article), a painting of Michael Parks from Kevin Smith's RED STATE and the pieces in my black and white MOVIE ICONS series (specifically Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, Nicholson's Joker and Pinhead from Hellraiser). Some of of my favorite Quiet Room Bears that I have made include an animatronic 'skinned' Bear ('session 30'), the Freddy vs Jason Quiet Room Bear and recently the Black Christmas bear, the Scream inspired bear and another animatronic one which pushes and pulls a knife in and out of a doll's head (which is in it's tummy), while the bear's actual face is wearing a mask made of skin. Some of the best Playful Dead Minis I think I've made so far include the new Doctor Who figures, Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute from The Office, the Tall Man from Phantasm, Pazuzu from The Exorcist and Sam from Trick 'r Treat.
