Martin Scorsese is without a doubt my favourite director of all time and has had the biggest influence on me in wanting to become a film maker (who hasn't he influenced). He is a film maker that has been making masterpieces for decades and because I am such a huge fan I thought I'd give my two cents on what I thought were his greatest films.

5. The Aviator

Scorsese teamed up with Leonardo Di Caprio for a second time in 2004 to bring us this brilliant epic about the life of troubled genius Howard Hughes. Di Caprio gives the best performance of his career as Hughes, Cate Blanchett is terrific as Katherine Hepburn, Beautifully shot by Robert Richardson and Scorsese directs it wonderfully and even designed the look of the film to the same as a colour film from that period. Scorsese perfectly captures each of the time periods amd shows us the dark side of Hughes and his struggle with OCD. This is the best film Scorsese has made in the past 20 years.

4. Taxi Driver

Scorsese's 1976 masterpiece staring frequent Scorsese collaborator Robert De Niro in a fantastic film that shows De Niro's character Travis Bickle and his decent into madness. It is well shot, brilliantly directed, masterfully acted with a terrific score from Bernard Hurrman. This is the movie that made everyone notice just how brilliant Scorsese is as a director. Taxi Driver is one of the best films of the 70's and of all time.

3. The King of Comedy

King of Comedy is undoubtedly Scorsese most underrated film because it is an absolute masterpiece. De Niro gives one of the best performances of his career as Rupert Pupkin a aspiring comedian who deludes himself into thinking he is best friends with Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis) a famous comedian with his own talk show. De Niro is with out a doubt the driving force of this film. An absolutely flawless performance that is unlike any other performance he had given before or any performance since this film.

Then most surprising thing about this film is that it absolutely bombed when it came out in 1983 only making 2 million back from its budget of 19 million. This is an absolute must watch for anyone who's a fan of De Niro, scorsese or just film in general.

2. Raging bull

How can you not love this movie? It has De niro giving everything he possibly can, it has Scorsese's signature directing, terrific performance from its supporting cast and beautifully shot fighting scenes. It is without a doubt the best film of the 80's. The film is about the life of boxer Jake LaMotta from him winning the championship to him going to jail. De Niro gained 63 pounds for the role and production was halted for a few months for De Niro to gain the weight

This film is a masterpiece and an absolute must see.

  • Shutter island
  • Mean streets
  • Gangs of New York
  • Casino
  • Martin Scorsese eats a cookie

1. Goodfellas

Goodfellas is my favourite film of all time. The performances are terrific, the direction is beautiful and the soundtrack is perfect in context with the film. The film is about gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and his life in the mob. The supporting cast includes Robert De Niro as Jimmy Conway, Paul Sorvino as Paulie Cicero and an oscar winning Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito all are members of the mob

If you haven't seen this movie then drop what you are doing and go watch this film because they don't get better than this.

That concludes the list of my favourite Scorsese films. If you agree or disagree you can leave your thoughts in the comments below
