So far the highest rated movie on my 'flicks to check out' series, 30 Days of Night is what I consider to be the best vampire movie ever made. It's original, it's bloody as all hell, and to top things off, it's actually scary. Sorry Lost Boys, there's been no dry comedy thrown into this one.
The vampires in this flick aren't strictly traditional vampires with fangs, but instead a whole mouthful of knife - teeth, blacked out eyes, inch long claws, and on top of that, they speak in a foreign tongue, so we can't understand a thing they're saying - nor can they understand the films protagonists, so reasoning with them isn't really an option.
What I love so much about these vampires is that they barely look human - more demonic than anything. The reason that I rave about this film so much isn't just the vampires however, it's also the great use of an isolated environment, which really plays mind tricks on the viewer. There's a great mix of psychological horror, along with action scenes and some damn freaky jump scares.
The only thing that lets this movie down is the ending, which I have to admit, was severely disappointing. I won't spoil anything for those of you who haven't seen the film - but enjoy the first 108 minutes of carnage, as the last 5 may leave you feeling a little depressed. All in all however, 30 Days of Night is a truly fantastic horror flick that I truly suggest you check out.
So what are you waiting for? Go watch it now, and tell me how you found it in the comments section of this post!
