Colton Haynes says we’ve been misled about his exit from Teen Wolf in October 2012.
Speaking to Schön! Magazine (after pulling an all-nighter in New York) Haynes said, “There was a level of unprofessionalism that went down that I just wasn’t comfortable with. It was tough when other parties went on ‘convention tours’ to announce false news, but I know the truth, they know the truth. It sucked. I felt like I was ripped away from this cast I had grown up with, who had become my family. I have this issue where I’m a rug. In the past, I’ve kind of nodded and said yes a lot and went about my business. I’m done being that.”
We first got word of Haynes’ exit via twitter - [email protected] - These past few yrs have been the best of my life. I'm sad that this chapter has ended, but excited for a new one to begin. Thx for the love
Sources said at the time that Hayne’s Jackson character wasn’t in the first five scripts of Season 3 and that would only appear in 12 of the 24 episodes.
Jeff Davis (back when he still had a twitter) denied knowing anything about the situation - @JeffDavis75 - Honestly, just as shocked and confused as you guys.
Then MTV came out with the “Official Statement” about Haynes saying there is “absolutely no truth that Colton is being pushed out or that he, or any cast member, is being replaced. We love Colton and look forward to his returning with the entire cast for season 3 of Teen Wolf.”
They doubled down on that line in a broader statement after it became clear Haynes wasn’t coming back – “We were just as surprised and disappointed as Colton’s fans to read out about his decision to leave the show. We want him to return for a third season, as he has for the past two, but if this is his decision we respect that and will wish him all the best. We are excited for what Jeff Davis and producers have in store for our incredible cast in the upcoming third season.”
As for the “convention tour” Haynes spoke of, we can’t be sure but Jeff Davis did appear at New York Comic Con in the days after Haynes announced his exit. Jeff said – “I spoke with Colton last night and he confirmed to me that he’s not coming back this season. I love Colton. I think he’s a great guy. He’s a great friend of mine. We’re going to miss him and I wish he was coming back but I also have to respect that he feels like he’s ready to move on. I think someone as talented as Colton is not going to have any trouble finding work. So, if this is really his final decision then we’ll respect it. I told him last night that if he decides to come back he knows there’s a great entrance for him.”
The spin on his exit from “Teen Wolf Official” sources has always been along those lines but Perez Hilton reported early on that the situation was a bit messier than the PTB let on –
"Colton wants to stay on the show badly. Apparently, [show creator] Jeff Davis is being irrational…"
"He wanted to cut his episodes to 12 instead of 24."
"And with that, NOT have him in the first 6 or the last 6 eps which makes NO sense unless you don’t like someone. It is like death and during those 12 he is not in, they wouldn't let him do a movie or anything else."
The new Schön! Magazine interview is the first time Haynes said anything negative about the show and its creators directly. He’s mostly remained quite or talked about how much he loved his experience while he was working on Teen Wolf.
Earlier this year, Jeff (while speaking in France) said that one or more of the cast members who left Teen Wolf might return for Season 5. Much of the speculation about a return swirled around Haynes but this new report makes that seem unlikely.
