You're probably wondering what kind of a title is that? Well this article is here to explain that. Lets delve into the question of: What is the Purpose of Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens?
Now what I mean is why are we getting a new Star Wars movie. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, I mean LOVE Star Wars, and seriously can't wait to see Star Wars 7, it's Star Wars for crying out loud. But when they announced the film I kinda wondered to my self, "A new Star Wars film? Do we really need another one?" I mean, lets be honest here, when you watch the ending of Return of the Jedi, do you think to yourself, "Man, I can't wait to see the next movie!" No, you don't. Why? Because Jedi was the conclusion of the original trilogy and we didn't want more films. We were satisfied with the end and we moved on, not thinking about more sequels because there didn't need to be anymore Star Wars films. So that brings up the question again, what is the purpose of The Force Awakens. Lets explore the reasons why.
1. A Continuation of the Original Trilogy?
Now this is a big possibility for Star Wars 7. We all want to see a new Star Wars film. Not just a new one, a REAL Star Wars film. But do we want to see it because we want to see a continuation of the story OR because we want to see a new Star Wars film? Because, in all honesty, like I said before, we don't need a continuation of the story. It ended perfectly and we were satisfied. However, J.J. Abrams is a huge Star Wars fan and maybe he wants to continue the story with Luke, Leia, and Han. On to the next point.
2. A Way to Make More Money?
This is also a possibility. Now you might be saying, "Come on, why would they make another Star Wars if they only want money?" but think about. How much money did the Phantom Menace make just on opening day? It earned $28 million on just opening day, $100 million in just five days, and became the quickest film to gross $200 and $300 million. So Star Wars definitely makes a ton of money. And how much money will The Force Awakens make? IMDb says it will be the second highest grossing film of the year behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron. The website says Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens will make $1.8 billion. That is a lot of money. It is going to make money, so some of the reasoning is there.
3. A Way to Sell Toys?
This is very unlikely. But, look at the Prequel Trilogy. They made a lot of money outside the box-office with branding and toy-selling. However, that was George Lucas, and this is J.J. Abrams. So this is almost at 0%.
Now the #1 thing I think is the purpose the [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](movie:711158) is...
4. A Way to Fix Star Wars
This is what I think is the number one reason as to why Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens and the Episode VIII and IX are being made: Because J.J. and Disney want to right the wrongs of the Prequels. We can all agree the Prequels are trash and the Originals are gold, but I think J.J. is making Episode VII so that he can make a good Star Wars film, why else would they make a 40-year-old sequel to Star Wars. This is a passion project for him. So if he fails, he not just letting the fans down, he's letting himself and the entire Star Wars universe down. And he wants to make a good Star Wars film so that the fans don't have to think of the Prequels anymore. You can think of it as like a Star Wars fan is making a film for the other Star Wars fans. I have faith in J.J. and hopefully he will give us an awesome film. Plus if he makes an awesome film, we'll get excited for Episode VIII and IX and if we get an awesome new trilogy, we might just fade the Prequels out of existence and we might think of them as BETTER than the originals. Imagine if that were to happen. In J.J. we trust and he'd better deliver.
So go down in the comments if you agreed or disagreed with me and answer the poll I have. Bye-bye, and see you next time.
