It's been one of the biggest questions in Marveldom for a while now - one sparked by Joss Whedon's repeated assertion that he wouldn't be returning after Avengers: Age of Ultron: Just who will direct the two-part third installment in the immensely successful series, Avengers: Infinity War?
Well, from the sounds of it, we finally know - and it's...probably more-or-less exactly who you were expecting.
One of the great open-secrets in recent months has been that The Russo Brothers - TV sitcom alums and directors of the hugely successful Captain America: The Winter Soldier (and its forthcoming sequel, Captain America: Civil War) - were Marvel's top choice to take over from Joss Whedon on the Avengers series too.
Well, it looks as though that has indeed come to pass - with Devin Faraci over at BadAssDigest reporting that a highly trusted source has confirmed that the Russo Brothers will indeed be taking over the reins of the biggest superhero franchise going.
The duo have apparently closed a deal to direct - with the Captain America series' writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely being tapped to script - which will, apparently, be officially confirmed soon.
Now, since this isn't technically an official announcement, it obviously needs to be taken with a grain of salt - but since there are no other obvious options out there, it sure seems like it'll be a done deal before long.
With Whedon stepping aside from the series - though he'll surely take on a Christopher Nolan-at-DC-like role as a senior Executive Producer - the only other obvious candidate was Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn, who has himself repeatedly distanced himself from the gig.
Which left the Russos - highly prized by Marvel after the surprise critical and commercial success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier - a pretty solid shoe-in for the gig. Add in the fact that they're clearly comfortable working within the neo-studio system that Marvel has established - a by-product of their TV background - and their hiring is seemingly a no-brainer.
All we're waiting for now? Official confirmation - and some sort of endearing tweet from Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans...
What do you think, though? Would the Russo's be your choice for Avengers: Infinity War? Is there someone you'd rather see? And just what will their hiring mean for the movie?
