Howdy guys and gals.
So besides being a comic loving super fan (read as geek, and I know it), I am an even bigger animal lover. From the small and scaled, to the large and furry, and everything in between, critters get special recognition from me. So it would make perfect sense that some of my favorite comic book characters just happen to be awesome animals. So without further ado, and in no particular order, here are...
MY TOP FIVE FAVORITE COMIC BOOK SUPER-ANIMALS!
Who couldn't love a pint-sized, purple, fire breathing, talking dragon and loyal companion. Lockheed made his debut in UNCANNY X-MEN #166, and instantly became a fan favorite with his feisty demeanor. Seeing how easily he dispatched the Brood and Sidri in protecting Kitty Pryde won me over and I have been a fan ever since.
DIAL M FOR MONKEY
Monkey burst onto the scene as a mini segment of the animated show DEXTER'S LABORATORY in 1996. DIAL M FOR MONKEY focused on Dexter's lab monkey, who unbeknownst to him, fought crime as a super-powered hero. Though irreverent and slapstick, I fell in love with the subversive depiction of comic book superheroes. Plus it was really funny.
It was the above four issue limited series that introduced me to Rocket Raccoon and I was totally hooked. Introduced in MARVEL PREVIEW #7, it was this 1985 series that made me a forever fan of the anthropomorphic raccoon with a chip on his shoulder. And what joy it was to see him showcased in the comic2film GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.
KRYPTO THE SUPERDOG
An alien dog with all the powers of Superman and none of the temperamental breed aspects of pure breeds. Yeah, that's the dog for me. ADVENTURE COMICS #210 gave us our first glimpse of Krypto, but it was his vicious attack on Mongul in defense of Supes (told wonderfully in SUPERMAN #170) that sold me on just how great the dog of steel is.
He had the power of the God of Thunder, as well as his hammer. And e'er since, that frog, newly dubbed Throg, uses yon hammer to protect his clan and stands e'er vigilant against any who would threaten them!
If that isn't enough to convince you that Throg, aka Puddlegulp, aka Simon Walterson (so named after the awesome Walt Simonson) is just plain awesome, the fact that he wields FROGJOLNIR and is a member of the PET AVENGERS should. It can't get any better.
Well, that's my list and I'm sticking to it.
