The 5 Potentially Greatest Super Heroes Of All Time, might not be who you think.
Every comic book fan has their own ideas as to who the best super heroes are and why, but few have such an odd combination of favorites as this motley crew of eclectic and eccentric super heroes.
Now I have chosen, what I believe to be potentially the 5 greatest super heroes of all time, from a variety of different comic book companies and publishers, from Marvel Comics, to DC Comics, to Wild Storm Comics, to Dark Horse Comics. This article will out line the 5 greatest super heroes of all time (in my opinion), and the reasons why they are so great.
Roxy (Free Fall) is a teenage super hero with a rebellious attitude who lives by her own set of rules. She belongs to a group of SPB's or Super powered Beings known as the GEN-13 Project. It was a Super Hero Recruiting camp ran by the military disguised as a college Fraternity/Sorority. They Basically forced the youngsters to "Evolve" into mutants with super human powers using Bio-Chemistry and some Unique Technology. The point is not how Roxy and her friends got their powers but who they were before. They were ordinary college kids. Just typical rebellious youngsters with chips on their shoulders. They had never met one another before and would not have spoken to each other in passing on the sidewalk. But They became family after a fashion, and joined together to fight a common enemy, the military genetics manipulating tyrants, known as I.O. (Intelligence Operations) Lead by Ivana Vanderbilt and Jack Lynch. Lynch later helped them escape and defend themselves by developing control over their new found abilities. Roxy gained the ability to manipulate gravity and to bend it to her will and even create gravitational shields. This gave her the ability to levitate as well which earned her the name Free Fall. She was raised catholic (like myself) and had an older boyfriend who was rough around the edges much like many young women her age in the real world. I fell in love with the Idea of an average ordinary everyday super hero as I'm sure many people have. She wore no costume and had no team logo. She never shouted some preachy slogan or corny catch phrase. She was who she was and didn't care what the rest of the world thought.
Next on my list is a vigilante who needs no introduction. I have chosen the infamous Dark Knight, because he is not in fact a super hero at all and is the only DC character I have any real respect for. You gotta hand it to Bruce Wayne. His Fortune might have started off as an inheritance, but he kept it going and he earned his place among the proud lineage of the Wayne Household. He is a master of countless martial arts, he has numerous degrees in varying fields of study, he's an inventor, a teacher, a scholar, a playboy, a philanthropist and a strong pillar of his community, often holding charity events of one form or another to raise money for those less fortunate. He uses his fighting prowess and his gadgetry to fight crime instead of some genetic super power or some alien ability or some mutation brought on by evolution or some freak accident. He is very human and possesses no super abilities or powers. He does it all on his own and for that my hat is off to him and he's earned the #4 spot on my list.
The name wolverine has almost become a household name and also almost certainly a sad cliche. Every kid wants to dress as him for Halloween, Every Comic-Con geek the world over adores him, every comic book writer wishes they had thought of him and everybody who has had contact with modern society knows who he is. Most would say this is an obvious choice for any comic fan's top 5 list, but few would have the same reasons I do. Wolverine is simply, "The Perfect Mutant". He has never had to evolve. Almost every super hero at some point has had to evolve or grow. They gain more powers, or their powers become stronger, or they learn better focus and control over their powers. But wolverine has never needed any of that to be an unstoppable fighting force. Yes, his skeleton was bonded with Adamantium which gave him a more indestructible body and sharper claws. But he never needed it. Before the bonding process took place his body could have been destroyed, but his body always seemed to reconstruct itself no matter what kind of damage was inflicted upon him. The Adamantium only enhanced what he already had and made him look way cool in combat. However he was virtually un-killable from birth. So He didn't need Adamantium to be the "Perfect Mutant".
"He Is Groot". Probably the least likely candidate for most powerful super hero, Groot is certain one of the best candidates for most selfless. Groot is the walking talking Humanoid Tree companion to Rocket Raccoon from (The Guardians Of The Galaxy). His entire vocabulary consists of only 3 words "I and AM and Groot, exclusively in that order" as his buddy Rocket mentioned in the recent hit film. But even though he possesses limited verbal communication skills, his actions speak far louder than any words ever could and besides his pal Rocket never shuts up, so it's a fair balance. But it is Groot's child like innocence and selfless devotion to his friends and his cause that has earned him this spot on my list. To me being a hero means far more than saving lives, beating the bad guys and saving the day. To me the purist form of heroism can only be measured in the heart, and no super hero has a bigger or purer heart than Groot.
Hell Boy is in the number one spot of my list simply because he has earned it. What could be more heroic than a demon who was created and summoned for the purpose of bringing an end to all life and a darkness for all eternity, choosing to fight against his dark and evil destiny to combat the very forces that brought him into existence? He was designed for an evil purpose, now he fights evil, Not just that of his own dark beginnings, but all forms of evil that threaten this realm which he now calls home. Adopted by a Catholic Paranormal Investigator and given a new purpose he now chooses to investigate the paranormal himself and vanquish evil whenever and wherever he may encounter it. Hell Boy is proof that life and heroism are not about where a man comes from or how he gets his start in life, they are about where a man is going and what purpose drives him and to what goal he is driven. Hell boy is by far The #1 Greatest Super Hero of all time in my opinion.
What do you think of this list? What Super Heroes would you list as the top 5 greatest of all time? And Why? I welcome all feedback.
