For [Halo](movie:559680) fans, it's been a busy and exciting week. 343 Industries have cryptically unveiled a host of information, ranging from an awesome trailer to an intriguing audio recording from within the Halo universe. Players have been eagerly searching for the clues that 343 have granted us, and we're here to amass everything we know about Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One and this Hunt the Truth campaign.
The main focus that 343 Industries has adopted for the selling of Halo 5: Guardians in recent weeks, is labelling Master Chief as a traitor. We're all well aware of the truth, though it's interesting to see the ramifications that this announcement will have on the narrative of Halo 5. Let's start with some background!
Halo 5 - Is Master Chief A Traitor?
The story of Halo 5: Guardians revolves around the threat of war. Peace is uprooted after the sudden attack of the Colony worlds. During this armada, Master Chief goes missing. UNSC becomes suspicious of his disappearance and sends Spartan Locke, aka Agent Locke, from [Halo: Nightfall (Digital Feature)](movie:1427493), to track him down. He is tasked with the takedown of this legendary hero and deciphering the mystery that threatens the galaxy.
The UNSC, Dr. Halsey & Agent Locke
With that aside, let's try and get into the head of the UNSC, and see why exactly these "traitor" allegations are being thrown around. In fairness, we can see where the UNSC is coming from; John did, after all, release the Didact, who attacked Earth, killing the population of at least one city. However, the reasoning for his campaign is still a mystery for them, as a lot of their attention is focused on the actions of Dr. Halsey. Halsey was branded a traitor following the war for the creation of the Spartans.
Since their inception, the UNSC has labelled Halsey's Spartans as traitors. She argues that no one was complaining once the Covenant arrived and her forces were ready to combat the attack. However, since the conclusion of the war, the Spartan forces actually became difficult for Halsey's ONI. In a sense, they are a menace to the organisation that once protected their existence.
After the events of Halo 4, and in particular the Spartan OPS section, we see Dr. Halsey become a kind of "Saint Mother", to an extremist group of Covenant soldiers. Together, they are looking to form the most dangerous weapon in the galaxy. Though Master Chief, Cortana and UNSC Infinity are of her design, it is hopefully their combined efforts that can bring about her downfall (could Cortana return in Halo 5?).
However, one of Halo's key lore concepts is that the UNSC is in fact an oppressive and ruthless dictatorship. They were only seen as a benevolent force, as the alternative to their rule was a group of genocidal executioners. Agent Locke is certainly under their control, though whether he believes that Master Chief is indeed a threat to the galaxy remains to be seen.
His characters will be explored in depth in Halo 5: Guardians, though we feel certain that he will in fact become an ally to the cause, just as the Arbiter did in Halo 2. We have an exciting campaign ahead to see whether this happens. Now, let's get to Hunt the Truth campaign and see what players have uncovered about Halo 5 on Xbox One.
Halo 5: Guardians - Hunt the Truth
First off, if you haven't seen the trailer, you can check it out below! Players have uncovered a series of words that the bullet conceals on its path to collide with Master Chief's helmet. The impact shatters his mask, and we're wondering whether this could foreshadow events that could come to pass.
In any case, here are all of the words that the bullet conceals in order during this trailer: Son, Abductee, Victim, Orphan, Recruit, Soldier, Warrior, Ally, Hero, Saviour, Traitor. These are the many different ways of describing the Master Chief in Halo 5, and we're excited to see which aspect of his personality will be on display in Guardians.
Players were also sent on a hunt all over the internet for the contents of a map. They were found on various sites, and thanks to the great people on Reddit, we have a picture of the star map so far. Naturally, this is some pretty cryptic information, but it will eventually reveal something interesting about the plot of Halo 5 when it hits the XBOX One.
So here's everything that we know about Halo 5: Guardians so far! Below you can check out the transcript of the war journalist, Benjamin Giraud, on his profile of John-117. Be sure to let us know in the comments what you think lies ahead for us all in Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One!
Benjamin Giraud on the Master Chief
According to Frank O'Connor, Benjamin Giraud is the Photographer featured in the Halo Graphic Novel story "Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa". Benjamin is classified as an "ONI Section II Operative".
"For decades, I’ve served the galaxy as a journalist and war photographer. I’ve covered human-interest stories on Earth and in the Inner and Outer Colonies. I’ve also contracted for the government, covering military affairs. I was at New Mombasa when the Master Chief first appeared to combat the Covenant attack.
When you're a war journalist you see a lot of horrible stuff. All the stories I've done - I've seen the absolute worst of humanity but I've also gotten to see the best. 6 years ago, I saw him. The greatest, most mysterious hero of our time, up close in action. I witnessed first-hand what he did that day and it changed everything for me. Anyone listening to this knows exactly who I'm talking about.
The guy who saved us, saved earth, saved mankind. Master Chief, officer Spartan 117, whom we now know as simply, the Master Chief. A few months ago I was hired to do an in depth profile on the chief. Exclusive access, the whole thing. Since then I've gotten to talk to a lot of people who claim they know the real Master Chief. The boy, the soldier, the hero...the traitor?
See I've always known where a story was going before it started, I've known exactly the story I've wanted to tell for years. The story all of us wanted to hear, glossy, inspiring, the blockbuster hero biography - that's all this was supposed to be. But the truth isn't always that clean. When I pulled that first loose thread, something broke.
Now that everything is caving in I'm stuck with all these ugly questions, questions I never intended to ask. Fabricated histories. People who aren't who they say they are. Cover ups of cover ups, that steady drumbeat of theories that used to sound insane, now they don't seem that out there. And these disturbing reports, anomalies. Something big is happening in deep space and I can't even corroborate a single fact about one man's life.
It's clear to me now, I can't fix the pretty story, but maybe I can break the other one. For the first time in my career I can honestly say I don't know the shape of where this is going and in fact the possibilities have me lying awake at night. But I believe we all deserve to know the real story; we need to know where this leads. I know I do. So I find myself back at the beginning.
Who is the Master Chief? Where does he come from? And is he keeping us safe? Join me as I hunt the truth about the Master Chief.
