Since the casting announcement a year ago, we've been patiently waiting to get a glimpse of what Jesse Eisenberg will look like as Lex Luthor in [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870). When the news was first announced, the internet was ablaze with speculation. Will they REALLY make this young kid bald? Will they age him up? Will he wear hoodies to conceal social awkwardness?
Now, Entertainment Weekly has put our inquisitive minds at ease. The lucky magazine has published the first image of Eisenberg in character, and let's just say that at least some of the important questions have been answered.
So, does he look like Lex Luthor?
I think that's the sound of a resounding YES!
Between the shaved head (no bald cap here), the penetrating stare, and the shadowy, high-contrast lighting only worthy of megalomaniacs and Time magazine covers, I'm just over here dreaming of the premiere date (March 26, 2016, by the way).
Now that we know what Lex will look like, the major question is what he will behave like. Director Zach Snyder has teased a departure from the many versions of Lex we have seen in the past:
He’s not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure, other than him being a captain of industry and one person to the world and another person to himself. And bald, of course...Our Lex is disarming and he’s not fake. He says what he believes and he says what’s on his mind. If you can unravel the string and decipher what he means, it’s all there.
Honestly, though this flies pretty close to Eisenberg's turn as Facebook visionary Mark Zuckerberg, I'd be really interested to see this Lex as a tech whiz with nerdy origins. Considering what many "captains of industry" look like these days—brash youngsters with ahead-of-the-curve start-up ideas—I think this updated Lex would make sense for the 21st century.
