This was one of the toughest rankings I have ever done, because David Fincher is one of my favorite directors in Hollywood. I consider him one of the best of all time. Outside of his first movie he has not directed a bad film. While his movies may not be for everyone, it is hard to argue his greatness. Here is how I would rank his ten films. I am not including shorts, documentaries, television movies, or small segments he has contributed to other movies. Remember, art is subjective, so everyone will likely have a different ranking. All information and statistics were taken from IMDB, Box Office Mojo, and Rotten Tomatoes.

10.) Alien 3 (1992) –

Made $160 million at the box office. Has a 44%/48% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This was David Fincher’s first movie, so he gets a pass in my book. It is hard taking over a franchise as a rookie director. This is the only blemish on David Fincher’s record.

9.) Panic Room (2002) –

Made $196 million at the box office. Has a 76%/63% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie stars Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam, and Jared Leto. I consider it a J.A.F. (Just Another Film). It is not bad or great. It is mediocre. If you are a David Fincher fan, you should give it a watch though. It is enjoyable.

8.) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) –

Made $232 million at the box office. Rooney Mara was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar. Has a 86%/86% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. I am putting this so low, because many consider the original 2009 film to be better. This is still a quality film though.

7.) Zodiac (2007) –

Made $84 million at the box office. Has a 89%/76% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. I think this movie is really underrated. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr. It is based on the real life Zodiac Killer.

6.) The Game (1997) –

Made $109 million at the box office. Has a 71%/84% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDB describes this movie as, “Wealthy San Francisco financier Nicholas Van Orton gets a strange birthday present from wayward brother Conrad: a live-action game that consumes his life”. I think this movie is really underrated as well. If YouTube and online reviewers had been popular in 1997, this movie would be remembered much more fondly. Go watch this movie if you have not seen it.

5.) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) –

Made $334 million at the box office. Nominated for Best Picture, Best Directing, and Best Screenplay at the Oscars. Taraji P Henson was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Brad Pitt was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. Has a 72%/80% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a great movie, but it may depend on the novelty of the backwards aging a little too much.

4.) Gone Girl (2014) –

Made $368 million at the box office. Rosamund Pike was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar. Has a 88%/88% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This was one of my favorite movies of last year. It did a great job of taking actors that not everyone likes and putting them in position to shine. Ben Affleck, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, and Emily Ratajkowski were all great.

3.) The Social Network (2010) –

Made $225 million at the box office. Nominated for Best Picture and Best Directing at the Oscars. Jesse Eisenberg was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. Won the Best Screenplay Oscar. Has a 96%/86% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie was about the creation and rise of Facebook. David Fincher did a great job of getting fantastic performances out of his cast of Rooney Mara, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Armie Hammer, Justin Timberlake, Brenda Song, and Dakota Johnson.

2.) Se7en (1995) –

Made $327 million at the box office. Has a 79%/95% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is one of the best movies of all time. The film stars Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, John C. McGinley, and Kevin Spacey. It is about a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

1.) Fight Club (1999) –

Made $100 million at the box office. Has a 80%/96% Critic and Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is also one of the best movies of all time. It has one of the best movie twists ever. It stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter, Meat Loaf, and Jared Leto. IMDB describes it as, “An insomniac office worker looking for a way to change his life crosses paths with a devil-may-care soap maker and they form an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more”.
