The Crazy Story of the Harry Potter Star Who Was Jailed for Molotov Cocktails and Rioting!

By Rob Harris ⋅ Posted on March 27, 2015 at 4:05pm

This month marks the three year anniversary since British actor Jamie Waylett - most famous for portraying Draco Malfoy's brutish henchman Vincent Crabbe in six of the Harry Potter movies - was sent to prison for brandishing a molotov cocktail in public.

Watch Waylett in action below - where did it all go so wrong?

Waylett was involved in the Summer 2011 riots that exploded on London's streets on August 6, sparked by the death of Mark Duggan - a local who was shot dead by police two days earlier.

Struggling with fame

The young actor faced adversity from a very young age, hit by a car when he was just nine-years-old. Doctors expected Waylett would die from his injuries, or at the very least suffer severe brain damage. But, against all the odds, he made a full and healthy recovery.

Things began looking up when the young lad's photograph was submitted as part of the auditioning process for the Harry Potter adaptation. Though at first he was considered for the role of Dudley Dursley, director Chris Columbus decided to cast him as Hogwarts bully Vincent Crabbe.

Instead of capitalizing on this turn of good fortune, Waylett became involved in drugs, arrested in 2009 for possession of cannabis - though this would just be the beginning of his troubles...

Draco Malfoy: "He's let himself down hugely really, and it's a disappointment for him and the franchise."

Just a couple of years later, Crabbe was behind bars, charged with violent disorder and handling stolen goods, both of which landed him two years of jail time.

The following picture was presented as evidence at his trial, clearly showing Waylett handling a homemade molotov cocktail:

The presiding judge said:

I accept entirely the jury's verdict that you did not throw or have any intention of throwing it but merely being in possession of it would have been terrifying to anyone who saw you.

Fellow actor Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) talked abut his disappointment with his on screen friend:

It's massively disappointing. I haven't got too much to say other than the fact that he's let himself down hugely really, and it's a disappointment for him and the franchise. Just disappointment, really.

Felton also spoke about how Waylett seemed distant on set, noting:

He was always slightly in his own zone and wasn't one to appreciate quite where he was and what he was doing.

You can watch the full interview with Tom below:

It's a shame to see so much potential wasted. Here's hoping the young actor can get his life back on track now he's been released.
